Hvor skulle jeg ha gått?  Where should I have gone? Du skulle ha gått i kirken på søndag.  You should have gone to church on Sunday. De skulle ha spist lunsj i dag.  They were supposed to have eaten lunch today. Hva skulle jeg ha gjort?  What should I have done? Vi skulle ha gjort noe.  We were supposed to have done something. Jeg skulle ønske han kunne være president i nye fire år.  I wish he could be president for another four years.

future preterite grammar

- the future preterite is used about time and also modally.

- for time, it is used about something in the past that is going to happen after something else also in the past.

Etter at de hadde stått opp, skulle de spise frokost.  After they had woken up, they were going to eat breakfast.

- it is used modally in hypothetical statements.

Hvis han vant, ville han reise jorden rundt.  If he won, he would travel around the world.

- and also when expressing wishes & polite speech.

Jeg skulle ønske det virket.  I should wish it worked.

- it is expressed using the auxiliary verbs skulle and ville & the infinitive. it is the same as in future tense, but skal and vil are in the past.
