Future Unlimited/Body Language May 18, 2015
Future Unlimited’s 2012 EP is the front runner to be my favorite album of 2015. I don’t know how I discovered them - When It Calls was the first song I heard but the entire EP turned out to be incredible. Luckily, the Nashville-based band came to play at Mercury Lounge this week. Although they only played two songs from the EP, including Golden, it was exciting to hear new music, which I hope results in a return to NYC. They put on a great show visually, with tall white columns reflecting colored lights and somehow the music made me feel physically relaxed. I chatted with the guitarist Matt after the show about NYC and Nashville and his comments about what’s great in New York, diversity, were spot on. Listening to the band feels like being in a Bret Easton Ellis novel, with retro synthesizers that create a sensual, dark vibe underneath a perfect facade, particularly in Haunted Love.
A few days before the show, I thought I’d see if it would be worth staying for the second band, Brooklyn-based Body Language, and I’m glad I did. The band’s positive energy was overwhelming and they played with unrestrained joy. From the sultry sounds in What’s the Point and Reset to what should be the most fun songs of summer, Just Because and their show-closing infectious Lose My Head, this is definitely a local band to follow.
