Next Week’s Topic & We Need Your Help
Episode 90 - “Star Crossed” will be out later today as it is Tuesday and we remembered to do a podcast this week.
Go us.
Anyway for Episode 91 will be talking about shows that ended before they got going or ended on a cliffhanger. Revolution, Firefly, Carnivale, etc. While shows like Lost Girl and Supernatural have gone on long after they used to be watchable.
So what are some of your favorite shows taken from us too soon?
hey there -- this is a big lesbian cliché, get ready: can i ask you about the boots you're wearing in the Car Butch photo? they look very like a pair of doc martens i had years ago that i loved and wore into the ground and have never been able to replace. when i bought mine, you were… in primary school, so i must assume yours are of a much more recent vintage. what are they and where did you get them? help an old dyke out! <3
I actually got these specific boots at a yard sale haha. They are doc martens, and I think they might be from the 'work boots' line, but I have no idea whether or not they're sold in stores. I tried looking on their website but unfortunately I can't find my specific model on there, or on a cursory google search. Sorry!
Can I be honest? I’m very, very confused as to why you guys are so upset about Beau saying she’s in love with a woman, because it’s not the woman you want her to be in love with...? I’m a lesbian and I feel like I’m missing something here
The short answer is, people are disappointed because a ship they cared about was dismissed. There's literally nothing wrong with that. Disappointment is a normal human reaction to things not going the way you wanted, and people are allowed to express that on their own blogs and in their own ship tags. It's not an attack on anyone, it's just people sharing their feelings.
The long answer is, for a lot of people this has nothing to do with specific ships or which is 'better' or anything like that. I like beauyasha! Most people I know in this fandom do. It's about the way that beaujester was dismissed and why that stings a little harder for many wlw in particular.
It's about the fact that Marisha went on Talks and explained that Beau's feelings for Jester weren't just physical, they weren't fleeting, it was deeper than anything she'd ever felt before. It's about the fact that barely any time has actually passed in-game between that declaration and Beau "falling out of love" with Jester. It's especially about the use of the word "lust", which is painful to hear after seeing Beau called predatory by lesbophobic fans over and over again due to her feelings for Jester, after being explicitly told that the feelings we were seeing weren't that shallow.
And this isn't about blaming Marisha or anyone else. Nobody thinks this was done maliciously and nobody's trying to 'cancel' her. People are just hurt because we already see so few f/f relationships in media that are treated with depth and care that it hurts to see one completely brushed off, EVEN WHEN it's to pursue a different gay relationship. A lot of wlw got very attached to the idea of seeing a healthy depiction of falling in love with your best friend, and being suddenly told "No, actually, it was just fleeting lust" stings, even if it wasn't on purpose, even if it's well within Marisha's right to make that decision.
Just...... be kind. People are disappointed and sad and they're probably gonna be vocal about it for the next couple days. Even if you don't personally understand, just be compassionate. Blacklist the tag if it's bumming you out. People expressing their disappointment is not an attack on you, your ship, or the show.
ok so I get what you and others are saying in terms of the dodie song, but it's... a song. plenty of art is about all kinds of different relationships and experiences. it's supposed to be relatable. one section of the community doesn't have sole claim to using it? you can't take a song that's been released to the public and say 'this is mine and you can't touch it' based on its content. everyone going at liam for it is ridiculous. not meaning to attack you, just asking you to consider the point.
Okay, point considered! It's a bad point! Nobody is saying that men or straight people can't listen to songs by or about wlw feelings. Of course they can. If Liam had just said he enjoyed the song nobody would have cared. The problem is he used a song about a wlw-specific experience (feeling predatory for your attraction to straight women because of homophobia) and said "this is how my male character feels about a woman". If you can't understand why that's wildly inappropriate, I don't even know what to say to you. Gay people singing about their own pain and struggles is for public consumption, yes, but not public appropriation. Literally just don't co-opt experiences that don't apply to you, it's not hard.
I just think it's interesting how some actions are deemed romantic by the fans & cast, and some aren't. I rewatched the obann fight, and sam says that it's sad Beau wasn't awake to see the romantic gesture Yasha did in pulling Beau away, but 10 min before Cad did the same to Fjord. Or last night with Jester cooling Beau down vs. Yasha doing it. (Also,I don't know if it was deliberate by Laura, but her immediately running to protect Beau,AND saying she wanted to save her after the romance comment👌)
Yeah I think you're right, that's something I've noticed for a long time (to various levels of annoyance lol). I get the feeling that the cast - and by extension the fandom - tends to latch very quickly onto the early "established" couples and primarily make romance-focused jokes about those pairs specifically. In this campaign, that's pretty much just Beau/Yasha and Jester/Fjord. This could be to avoid seeming presumptuous, or just because it's easy targets, I don't know for sure. I think if the dynamics in the party significantly change that the jokes will too, but for now everybody's shipping goggles are pretty..... stationary.
(We could also talk about how parts of this fandom are very heterosexual and how that leads to moments between two men or (especially) two women being seen as platonic while the same actions between a man and a woman are read as flirting, but I truly am not in the mood to open that can of worms right now)
I’m more annoyed that an artist won’t get as much traffic/recognition by taking the song off the playlist. Hope people still check out the song and artist.
I agree, I love Dodie. However, if they wanted to showcase her as an artist they could (and should) have put one of her songs on the playlists of the multiple canon wlw. Or used a song of hers that isn't explicitly about gay attraction. I do hope people still listen to her though, her music is lovely
