SAIC Alumni Well Represented in Chicago Artists Coalition’s Summer Group Show, opening Friday

This exhibition is not your typical summer group show.  In fact the exhibition’s title is:  A Challenge to the Summer Group Show: BOLT Alumni Exhibition & Dialogue.  Now in its fifth year, The Chicago Artists Coalition’s  BOLT Residency alumni showcase their current work and discuss their development as artists in what the website touts as “an experimental survey and series of events that directly acknowledges and engages its artists and audiences.”    As it happens, most of the participating artists are not only BOLT Residency alumni, but SAIC alumni too:

The exhibition, curated by Teresa Silva, will run from May 29 - June 17.   The opening reception will be held at CAC, 217 N Carpenter St., Chicago on Friday, May 29, from 6-9pm.

Steve Reinke in conversation with FVNMA Chair Jon Cates

Video Artist Steve Reinke will be in conversation with SAIC's Film Video New Media, and Animation department chair Jon Cates on Sunday, August 17th, at 7pm.  The event will take place at Iceberg Projects, 7714 N Sheridan Road, Chicago.  The evening will include two Chicago premiers of Reinke's work, curated by SAIC photography professor Doug Ischar.   

A collection of Steve Reinke's work is housed in SAIC's Video Data Bank.

Grad Student Kevin B Lee Gains Critical Acclaim for Transformers "Premake"

On Friday, June 20 graduate student Kevin B. Lee presented Transformers: The Premake at the Nightingale. Although the twenty-five-minute-long YouTube video had premiered days prior to the viewing, Lee showed the film to a sold out audience. 

Lee's website describes the Premake as [utilizing] a “'desktop documentary' technique that acknowledges the internet’s role not only as a boundless repository of information but as a primary experience of reality. It creatively depicts the process in which we explore a deep web of images and data to reach moments of discovery and decisive action. In a blockbuster cinema culture rife with insipid remakes of franchise properties, The Premake presents a critical counter-image in which personalized digital media asks what Hollywood is really doing in the world."

Lee has achieved much critical acclaim for this newest project, including spotlight from RogerEbert.com and Filmmaker Magazine.

Kevin B. Lee is a filmmaker, film critic and video essayist. He is Founding Editor and Chief Video Essayist at Fandor Keyframe and founding partner of dGenerate Films (a distribution company for independent Chinese cinema). He was supervising producer at Roger Ebert Presents At the Movies, and has written for The New York Times, Sight & Sound, Slate and Indiewire. He is currently pursuing an MFA in Film Video New Media and Animation and an MA in Visual and Critical Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Fragile Bits and Dead Media: Preserving Computer Based Works of Art When: Monday, November 11 2013, 6:00 PM to 7:45 PM Location: Neiman Center

What are the risks and threats in a collection of born-digital and computer based works of art? How do contemporary art conservators cope with inevitable obsolescence? What are contemporary art conservators at collecting institutions such as MoMA doing to ensure that museum goers will be able to interact with software based works of art for centuries to come? Ben Fino-Radin joins us to share a first-hand account of the trials and tribulations in the stewardship of MoMA's collection of born-digital works of art and design objects that already spans over five decades of the interaction between artists, designers, and technology.

Erkki Huhtamo: Tracing the Topoi, A Media Archaeologist's Notes

Erkki Huhtamo will draw from his work with topos study – which he defines as as recurring discursive concepts, visual or audio, that can be traced cross-historically, and to various extents, cross-culturally – and present a selection of topoi associated with modern media technology such as the “hand of God,” permeable screen surfaces, the "cloud", and the relationship between 19th astronomical lanterns and stargazing apps available today on mobile phones.
