There was a little bit more hesitance on sober Jane’s part, the next morning, when they met to decide how best to meddle in three of their friend’s lives, but the will of Natasha would not be denied. So, the astrophysicist rationalized that they were only doing it to help their friends out, because they wanted them to be happy. Because that never turned out badly.
They brainstormed ideas for over an hour, and eventually came up with a basic 3 step plan.
Step one: Educate Bucky and Steve on Polyamorous relationships
Step two: Get Bucky and Steve together
Step three: Get Bucky and Steve to date Darcy
This was wildly simplified, of course, and each step in their plan had an intricate web work of sub steps, giving each of the women tasks to complete and a part to play. They took a few days to get everything ready and go over the plan until they had everything ready and memorized and they were sure everything would go as planned.
Step one was obviously the least complicated and easiest of the three steps.
Natasha issued each of them an earpiece set to a secured frequency and they coordinated their attack.
“I have a visual on the targets,” Natasha announced, into Jane’s ear. “They’re approaching your location. Arrival in five, four, three…”
Jane took her cue, sitting at the common room dining table with Helen as they took a break and ate lunch. “So, Helen,” she asked as soon as she heard the sound of the boy’s voices approaching. “Tell me about your date with Scott and Hope! How did things go last night?”
Jane winced at the stilted cadence of her voice, but there wasn’t anything she could do about it. She was a scientist, not an actress or a spy! She tried to act normal, though, and luckily, Helen was very relaxed and played her part beautifully, because it actually wasn’t playing at all.
Helen blushed and smiled into her tea. “It was the most amazing evening! They took me to that fancy new restaurant in town and we had a nice dinner, then we came back here and drank wine and just talked until nearly 2 in the morning! Scott was so funny all night, making silly little jokes and making sure I was comfortable, and Hope is just so brilliant and confident. She always puts on such a cold, professional front at work, but last night she was warm and kind,” the woman put her hand over her stomach and bit her lip. “I’m getting butterflies just thinking about them.”
“Did they kiss you good night?” Jane asked, letting her friend’s excitement help her feel more natural and easy.
“Oh yes,” the geneticist gushed, her grin wide as rested her chin on her hand and gazed off into the distance, replaying the scene in her head. “They walked me back to my room after we realized it was so late. They both held my hands and then, when we got back…” She sighed and smirked. “I’d never kissed a woman before. It was quite lovely; Hope’s lips were so soft and sweet. And Scott, well, he can be very charming when he sets his mind to it and he kisses like he’s casing you out so he can figure out all your weaknesses.”
Jane listened to Helen talk while she pretended not to notice the Captain and his friend enter the large open room and walk over to the fridge. Their conversation had died off when they entered, and she had the feeling they were listening in, though they were trying to be polite enough not to interrupt.
“Is it as different as you thought, dating two people instead of one?” Jane asked, going with the script Natasha had made her memorize since it seemed their targets were in range and behaving as predicted.
Helen shook her head and smiled dreamily. “It actually works really well between the three of us,” she sighed. “I mean, it’s still new and so every little thing is wonderful, and I expect there will be times when I will be kicking myself for inviting the complication of two people into my life so intimately, but I think it would be even worse if I just tried liking just one of them, or if the three of us had some angst filled love triangle drama. Can you imagine? Now that would be awful. No, I think the three of us fit so well together. We complete each other in ways that just two of us wouldn’t.” Helen’s smile grew wicked and she flicked her eyes towards the kitchen area, just for a second before leaning over to whisper not so quietly, “Besides, I’m quite looking forward to the sex with all three of us together.” There was the sound of fluid being violently rejected that confirmed Natasha’s theory about super hearing.
“Well, I’m very happy for you, Helen, and if any of the people in your lab give you a hard time about it, you tell me and we’ll get Nat to beat them up. It might not be as common as same sex relationships yet, but I think polyamory is something we’re going to see more and more of, and I think as long as you’re happy, that’s what matters. Besides, it’s the 21st century for crying out loud. If people want to have more love in their lives, why should anyone have anything to say besides, good for you?” Jane delivered her speech and found that it was getting easier to sound normal. It helped that she was saying something she really believed and felt passionate about.
Now things were going to get tricky. “Neither of them have soul mates?” Jane asked, and felt immediately guilty and icky about it, even though Natasha insisted it was a pertinent point and Helen had known the question was coming.
Helen’s smile turned fragile as she shook her head. “Well, Scott’s soulmate is platonic, like yours, and Hope is a blank.” The Korean woman took a deep breath, preparing herself for her next statement. “And, you know about my… About my Seong.”
Jane nodded, and put her hand over the other woman’s. She didn’t have to fake any of the sympathetic concern on her face. Helen had told her the story about her soulmate. They’d been next door neighbors growing up, childhood sweethearts, but he’d been killed in a car accident when Helen was 15. It was part of why she’d dedicated her life to finding better ways to heal people.
“It feels like, even though we don’t share words, that we were all meant to have this chance to find each other and be happy together, have a second chance at love,” Helen added, voice soft, but sincere.
“Well, I’m rooting for you, Helen. You, and Hope and Scott,” Jane said with all her conviction, meaning every word. Then she took a deep breath and looked down at her empty plate. “Well, I should get back to work!”
“Me, too! Thanks for eating lunch with me, Jane. We should do this more!”
They said their goodbyes and cleaned up before heading back to their labs.
“Nice work, ladies,” Natasha announced as soon as they were out of the common room and away from prying super soldier ears. “It looks like they were both paying attention.”
“Who spit their drink all over?” Jane asked, fighting down a mischievous smirk.
“That was Barnes,” Nat chuckled, “but I think Steve would have done the same thing if he’d been drinking at the time. He was too busy trying to pretend not to be eavesdropping, though. You should have seen the look he gave Bucky after he did it. I think he was worried they were going to get caught listening in and yelled at. Well played, you two.”
Jane resisted the urge to take a bow in the empty hallway. Maybe she was a better spy than she’d thought.
She was so proud of herself and distracted by her hitherto undiscovered skills in espionage and intrigue that she walked around the corner and right into Tony and Clint, who she really should have noticed because they were arguing quite loudly about something to do with boomerang arrows vs. exploding acid arrows.
“Whoa there, Doc,” Clint said, snatching her arms before she could tumble all the way to the floor, and standing her back upright. “You okay?”
“I’m fine! I’m not spying or anything!” She blurted, and then slapped her hands over her mouth.
Tony and Clint both raised their eyebrows in surprise.
“No one thought you were,” Clint said, only to have Tony give him a skeptical side eye.
“Not till you said that,” Stark added. “What’s up, Doc?”
She tried to escape while the two of them giggled over their love of cartoons, only to be jerked back at the last second, by Tony’s hand on her arm. “No, but seriously, you have to tell us now,” he declared, face very serious.
“Help!” She whispered vehemently and was relieved when Natasha announced she was on her way before cursing up a storm in her earpiece.
She squeezed her lips and eyes shut tight and waited for back up.
On second thought, Jane didn’t think this sneaky stuff was for her.

Part 2
The evening goes fairly well, at first. The shots of vodka and pitchers of mango daiquiri flow freely as the ladies, Darcy, Jane, Wanda, Nat and Helen, unwind and let their hair down. Wanda talks about her training, both physical and with her powers, and bitches a little about the Captain's new regimens.
Jane and Helen both talk about their work, Darcy reminding them both to dumb it down enough for it to make sense to the normal people, and Helen mentions that she's actually got a date with Scott and Hope, whom she's been working closely with on her new designs for injury regenerating armor.
They tease her a little, but let her know that they're really excited for her, since she blushes enough to let them know she's excited about the upcoming social outing.
This leads into Nat debating the pros and cons of her options for Valentine’s Day booty (she’s debating between Wilson and Carter) and Jane waxes poetic about her and Thor’s plans for the big day.
About 5 minutes in, though, Jane realizes that she’s doing it again. She’s going on and on about how awesome her life is when Darcy is quietly sitting there trying to look attentive and not like she’s wincing inside every time one of them mentions dates, or romance, or Valentine’s Day. Jane knows Darcy isn’t going to have a breakdown or lose her mind because she doesn’t have a date for Tuesday night, but she also knows it can’t be awesome sitting around listening to everyone else and be the only one…
“What about you, Darcy?” Helen asks innocently after Jane quickly ends her spiel guiltily. “Do you have any fun plans for Valentine’s?
Darcy smiles (grimaces) and shakes her head as she lifts her extra-large glass and drains the last of her mango daiquiri. She wipes her mouth as she lowers it back to the table and fails to make eye-contact as she does what Darcy does best.
“I’ll be spending Single’s Awareness Day just like I spend every day, working the lab and then going home to cuddle up to my B.O.B., who, unlike most men, can actually give me orgasms, so it’s not a total loss,” she deflects with humor and a touch of self-deprecation.
Helen frowns in confusion while Wanda studies Darcy with a neutral face and Nat just rolls her eyes. “But what about the Captain? Or Sargent Barnes?” Helen inquires. “I thought you were pretty close with one or both of them?”
Darcy shrugs. “Sure. Close friends. We aren’t like that.” She stands up and picks up her glass. “I’ve gotta pee and then I need a refill. Anyone else?”
No one misses the abrupt change in subject. They all shake their head and then watch as Darcy sets her glass on the kitchenette counter and disappears into the hallway.
“I thought she liked Steve. And James,” Helen says, looking as guilty as Jane felt and frowning before turning to Jane with concern written all over her pretty face.
“She loves them. Both of them,” Wanda announces and all three of the other women jerk their heads towards her. “She thinks she could never choose between them, so she chooses neither of them.”
Nat scowls. “I thought Rogers said you were supposed to be staying out of people’s heads while off duty.”
Wanda shook her head. “I did not go looking. Darcy is a broadcaster. Her thoughts are so loud, sometimes I can hear them from across the compound. I’ve been trying to block them out, actually, but it takes much effort.”
Nat considered that, and then narrowed her eyes for a second. “And my thoughts?”
“Silent, but deadly?” Wanda suggests, one eyebrow quirking. There was a moment and then everyone cracks up laughing. Thank you Tovaritch! and Captain Morgan.
It takes them a second to quiet down, but when they do, Jane speaks up, face serious, once again. “If she’s worried about choosing, why doesn’t she let them decide? I’m fairly sure one or both of them like her, and if they do then she should be with one or both of them. I feel really bad, sometimes. Darcy puts such a strong face on all the time, but I don’t think she’s really happy. I just want her to be happy, you guys.”
Nat nods along. “We all know what a flirt Barnes can be, but he does seem a bit more… focused, more intense, when he flirts with Darcy. And I’ve seen Rogers looking at her when he thinks he isn’t being observed. He’s more subtle, but I think he could be just as in to her. If they both really do like her, then she wouldn’t have to choose.”
Jane considers that then shakes her head. “I’m not sure how easy it would be to convince Steve to share. Isn’t he pretty straight laced and conservative?”
Nat and Wanda both snort at that.
“What?” Jane askes, feeling like she’s missing out on the joke.
They exchange a look and then Wanda shrugs at the redhead. “He makes no effort to hide it.”
“Steve is bisexual, Jane. I’m pretty sure he had a sizable crush on Sam, but since Wilson is about as straight as they come… Bucky, too, now that I think about it,” Nat surmises, head tilting thoughtfully.
Wanda gave a little knowing smirk at that. “The Sargent is also fairly loud with his thoughts. He is mostly straight, but he is often conflicted by more than friendly feelings for his best friend. I think if he were not so interested a breasts and what lay between a woman’s legs, they might actually be together already.” She looks down guiltily then, giving her own mostly empty glass a glare. “I probably shouldn’t have told you that.”
“I’m torn on the subject,” Helen sighs. “I love girl’s night gossip, though I sort of feel like we’re cheating with a mind reader in the mix. Still… I really like knowing things! ” She giggles, winked fondly at Wanda, and then leans against Jane’s shoulder. “Still, it sort of feels like the three of them are being massive idiots who could have something great, given a nudge in the right direction.”
Nat grins at her wickedly. “I like the way you think, Cho. Who’s in?”
Jane’s head snaps up from where it had been drooping against the back of the couch. “What? Wait… seriously? You think we could… help them out?”
Nat, looking devious and pleased with her thoughts, nods. “I think, between the four of us, we could work something out. Nudge them in the right direction,” she adds, tilting her head at Helen.
They were all nodding and smiling when Darcy came skipping back in. She began throwing ingredients into the blender and humming ‘Single Ladies’ to herself. Nat held one finger to her lips and waits for the buzz of the blender to kick on.
“Come by my place tomorrow, and we’ll work out a plan,” she whispers, the bunch of them leaning together and fighting off another wave of giggles.
Jane just hopes this still sounds like a good idea in the morning.
“Hey, Darcy! I need more booze!” Jane yells and downs the last of her own drink.
“Coming right up!” her soulmate called cheerfully.

Summary:
When it builds, when it's too much for them to take, they come together.
I’m so sorry this is posted absolute last minute, and it’s only the first part. In my defense, my sister that I live with just had a baby and we’ve had company visiting, so... Here’s the first part. More coming as soon as I get it completed. And this means you get to decide if you want smut or not. So yay for choices.
Jane had the best soulmate in the whole world.
She'd never been one of those girls that fantasized and planned and dreamed about her soulmate. She'd always been too busy trying to figure out how things worked and looking up at the sky with her father. It wasn't that she didn't care, or wasn't excited about her soulmate, it was that having and finding the one person that would utterly get her and make her life complete was simply an absolute. It was a given that she had probably just taken for granted as a kid.
Jane tried not to take Darcy for granted any more.
Some days were better than others. There were days when Darcy stood at her side and supported her through the big things, like Thor leaving, or being tricked into going to Tromsø, or aliens attacking London, or all the times she'd realized how much Darcy had put together and organized things for her speaking tour. Those big things were easy to notice.
Jane was working on noticing the little things, too, like when Darcy magically knew the perfect song to play, no matter what mode she was in, or her awesome, incredible shoulder massages, or the way she dressed up healthy snacks to make them more appealing. Darcy had always done all the grocery shopping and the laundry and the dusting, which had been part of her duties as Jane's intern, but she still did them even after, and it wasn't just out of habit. Darcy had declared she would never again do Jane's dishes once she was free from her "Intern-dentured servitude" as Darcy called it.
Jane was even trying to appreciate the way that Darcy left little doodles and dirty limericks on the margins of Jane's paper notes, and the way that Darcy would call her on her shit, even after she was a world-renowned astrophysics. While her academic peers where groveling and kissing up, Darcy was there to tell Jane that three days was definitely too long to go without bathing and/or changing her clothes and that denim and flannel were not appropriate attire for addressing an over packed lecture hall of post-grads.
It was a work in progress, but Jane could honestly say she was trying.
Which is why, when she spotted Darcy standing by the window, staring outside and not doing the metric conversions on the data she'd given her over an hour ago, for the third time, she bit back the instinctual rebuke that bubbled up and, instead, walked over to find out what it was that had her best friend/platonic soulmate/lab assistant so distracted.
On the grass below the Avengers were taking advantage of the unseasonably warm February afternoon to do some trust exercises on the lawn. Jane followed Darcy's gaze down to where Captain Roger's was talking a blindfolded Sargent Barnes through an impromptu obstacles course made up of bright orange traffic cones and some of the free weight Dumbbells they'd borrowed from the gym.
When Jane glanced back at Darcy she expected to find her face filled with the oh so familiar 'I wanna tap that' gaze that was the young woman's usual expression whenever they were around the Captain and his right hand man, but there was only a mild sadness tinged with a bit of frustrated longing.
Darcy noticed Jane studying her and forced a lecherous smile onto her face, but it was too late. She'd seen behind the mask.
"I was sort of hoping they'd take off their shirts and we'd get a show before dinner, but no such luck. Guess it's still a bit cold out for naked wrestling, eh Jane?" Darcy said and then turned and walked back to her computer terminal where she went back to working on the numbers she'd been given.
Jane walked over and leaned against Darcy's desk, much the way Darcy did for her when it was time to tear herself away from science in the name of basic life sustaining activities. Like sleep. Or coffee consumption.
"You should just ask him out?" Jane threw out there, non-sequitur.
"Who?" Darcy asked, going for the absent-minded nonchalance that was usually Jane's MO.
"Whoever it was you were just pinning over," Jane answered. "Which is it? I mean, I know you have the hots for both of them, and you flirt with both of them, but that look, the one you were wearing just now, that was a ‘I want to cuddle and go to farmer's markets with him’ look, which is decidedly more serious than a ‘I wanna tear his clothes off and climb him like a tree’ look. So which one do you want to take home to meet the 'rents and marathon Netflix with?"
She watched very closely as Darcy tried not to scowl and act casual.
"I think you've been looking at computer screens too much, Jane, you're starting to see things that aren't there," her soulmate retorted blandly.
"Uh huh, so you weren’t just running potential baby names through your head or trying to decide if you should do your wedding in red, white, and blue, or in red, black, and sliver," Jane teased.
Darcy's eyes flicked up at her in obvious annoyance. "Get real, Jane. You know I decided on purple and green years ago, and I see no reason to ever change my mind. Not that a wedding is even remotely in my future. Cause it's not. Which is fine. Don't you have work you need to do? Some law of space and time you need to be bending?"
Usually, Jane would let her friend deter her from pushing, let her change the topic of conversation and let the subject drop, but that was before she'd seen the look on Darcy's face. It suddenly occurred to Jane how very lonely Darcy must be.
Not that she needed a man to make her life complete, or any bullshit like that, but, in all their time together, it had always been about Jane and Thor. It had always been Darcy supporting Jane, comforting Jane, providing tequila and rocky road for Jane. Even after New York and Jane giving up on waiting for Thor for a while, it had always been Darcy encouraging Jane to get back out there and go on dates.
Things had never ever been about Darcy. Jane didn't even think she'd ever seen her go on a date. Spontaneous make-outs with the intern's intern notwithstanding, Darcy's love life had been pretty non-existent in the 5 years since they'd spoken each other's words. It was to the point that she'd suspect Darcy's sexual and/or romantic proclivities to run more towards the a- end of the grey scale, if it wasn't for the many drunken confessions in which Darcy had revealed her appreciation for the male form and her history with horny shenanigans.
Speaking of drunken confessions...
"Why don't we get the girls together have a ladies’ night? Helen mentioned to me the other day that she wanted to get together, and I know Natasha and Wanda are always up for getting down when they're not on call. What do ya say? Shall we see if they're free tonight?" With the way Darcy was narrowing her eyes at her, Jane figured her attempt to segue naturally had failed.
She deployed the big brown eyes tactic of getting what she wanted. It almost never failed.
"Please? We haven't gone out since we moved the lab here and I know its way past due. We’ll call the girls, go kick the boys out of the rec room and see if that bar has any of the good stuff stocked?” Jane suggests in her best causally hopeful voice.
Eventually, Darcy sighed and pushed away from her desk. “That does sound nice. That means I won’t have this stuff done tonight, though? Do you think the science will survive?” Darcy’s mocking gasp doesn’t go unpunished. Jane slaps her butt and Darcy jerks away, laughing.
“Abuse! Abuse!” Darcy yells and then steps in and wraps an arm around Jane’s shoulder. “You definitely own me a drink now, woman.”
Jane rolls her eyes. “You are such a brat…” she huffs, but her smile ticks up on one side and Darcy squeezes her tighter to her side for a second. “I don’t know why I put up with you.”
“Cause you love me, Janey, and cause the universe said you had to. Everyone knows you’re a slut for listening to the universe,” her soulmate teases as they pass through the lab doors.
Jane sighs in defeat. “That’s true… Guess I’m stuck with you.”
