❝ The witches of Middle Earth were a mystery. Not to be confused with the Witch-King of Angmar, who befouled the name with his wicked deeds and black heart, the true witches were descended from Man, and practiced only pure, white magic, using their gifts and harnessing the power of the earth around them to heal and protect the other citizens of Middle Earth. Comprised entirely of female magic-users and constantly travelling around to assist as many people as possible, the Middle Earth Coven kept to themselves and did not reveal the secrets of their magic or their ways to anyone. No one truly knew the witches - save, perhaps, for the wizards of Middle Earth, who knew everything - but all knew that anyone who valued their life did not even think of crossing them.
Morrigan was a witch - the granddaughter of the Middle Earth Coven’s current leader, conjured in her mother’s womb via a spell cast in the dark of night as all witches were. She had grown up around the witches’ nomadic ways, never staying in one town for long, never truly connecting to anyone but her sisters, sitting on her mother’s knee as she was taught all the spells she would need to help those in need and fulfill her purpose as a Middle Earth witch. Now a grown woman, she was one of the most talented spell-casters in the Coven, popular among her sisters for her skill in battle magic and loved in many villages for her powerful healing abilities.
As such, when the infamous wizard Gandalf the Grey comes to visit the Middle Earth Coven, asking Morrigan’s grandmother to spare a with to accompany him and a group of dwarves on a quest, Morrigan is the obvious choice to go. Despite the worries of her mother and grandmother, who worry about this young witch who has never ventured away from her sisters before, Gandalf rides away from his visit with Morrigan beside him, the young woman’s silvery hair flying in the wind and a thrilled smile on her face at the prospect of finally getting to go on an adventure of her own.
Now part of Thorin Oakenshield’s merry company, on a possible suicide mission to take down a dragon with a motley crew of dwarves and one perpetually nervous hobbit, Morrigan is forced to wonder whether riding off into the unknown with a wizard she only met a few days ago was truly the greatest idea.
But as their quest continues, the danger of confronting Smaug looms greater and more terrifying on the horizon, and love begins to bloom, she finds herself unable to regret her decision. Not when it has turned out to lead to events as wonderful, awful, and ultimately life-altering as these. ❞
