@fyrea I feel you but I honestly just listened songs where I was comfortably familiar with the artistes on them and that’s like 3 or so. I know that people were talking about her speaking Yoruba and if I heard it, I probably did not recognize it because the accent was way off or something.

Things like this (similarly to so many Hollywood/American productions based off the very vague idea of Africa) will always be reductive and monolithic because it’s not really genuine (if Hollywood can manage that) and as far as the album is concerned it mostly featured artistes that have managed to have a wide “continental cross over” (particularly in the diaspora, like I wish someone who write a very deep and well researched article on the rise of afrobeats because the Nigerian diaspora in particular is so instrumental in its popularity) and whose music and image is really popular right now like Wizkid or Yemi Alade or Burnaboy.

I really think that we should be paying more attention to the myriad of artistic creativity going on in countries on the continent and supporting them. I’m not really interested in the idea of proper African representation because that’s a myth and it usually requires us overworking ourselves for an undeserving audience about what Africa is and is not and that would always be reductive and tiring.

Don’t know if you heard about the sexual assault allegation made against Jason Mitchell on the Chi and Desperados. Tiffany Boone was one of the actors on the Chi who said she was sexually harassed by Mitchell.

Everyone knew, Lena Waithe knew from season 1 like this shit is messy as fuck you can google to hear what she says but many people knew from season 1 and nobody thought of firing this man until Tiffany Boone and others spoke out. 

So recently in a interview Lena Waithe said how Will Smith and Denzel Washington don’t fund and finance Black filmmakers even though they have helped bring up a lot of talent through their production companies and didn’t we just hear about Denzel paying Chadwick Boseman school fees. So yeah she got dragged for that. 

It’s classic deflection “Look over there at them and what they are doing don’t look at me.”
