queer is a slur directed at people who are attracted to other people of their same gender. as with any slur, people affected by it can reclaim it, so some people reclaim it for themselves, thus calling themselves queer as an identifier

that’s kinda spiraled into people thinking that anyone who’s even remotely not straight is queer though, which is where you see people using it as an umbrella term, even though it’s a slur directed at specific groups (so, in one sense, it’s inaccurate as an umbrella term to begin with and, in another sense, many people aren’t comfortable with it being used for them)
