"Dad, there's something I should tell you," Shawn said. He leaned forward, elbows resting on his knees, clasping his hands. "I'm bisexual."
Henry scoffed and turned the page of his newspaper. "Sure you are, kid."
"I didn't want to say anything for a long time, because I didn't think it was anyone's business, but—wait, what?" He frowned. "You don't believe me?"
"Of course I do. Why shouldn't I?" Henry said sarcastically. "You've never said anything to me as a joke, or as a trick, or because you think it's true right now but five minutes later you change your mind."
"Dad, I'm not joking," Shawn insisted. "I'm trying to come out to you and you're turning it into a roast? What kind of parenting is that?"
"Shawn, I've already accepted that whatever kind of parenting I tried with you must have completely failed. I mean, look how you turned out."
Shawn exhaled sharply. He thought he was past caring about Henry seeing him as a disappointment, but that still stung.
After a few moments of awkward silence, Henry sighed and put the paper down. "What makes you think you're bisexual?"
Shawn raised an eyebrow. "Uh, it's pretty straightforward. No pun intended," he said. "I like women and I also like men."
"Really? How come you've never dated one?"
"Who says I haven't?" Shawn protested.
Henry gave him a challenging look. "Have you?"
Shawn deflated slightly. "No," he admitted. "But that's not because I'm not interested."
"Interested," Henry repeated, scoffing. "Because that's not vague at all. Look, Shawn, the reason I don't believe you is because I don't think you actually know what you're talking about. I mean, listen to how you're phrasing this. You like men? You're interested? Newsflash, kid: men can be interesting. Men can be attractive. I've liked plenty of men, sometimes just as much as women. It doesn't mean anything." He picked up the paper again.
"Dad, there's something else I should tell you," Shawn said.
