Guide to the Psychateuch (i.e. genesisexorcistleviathan's Psych fics)
Fun fact: Shawn Spencer is always bi in these and always has a massive crush on Pierre Despereaux, whether or not it's relevant to the plot. (Spoiler: it often is. Sometimes it's the entire plot.) In stories where he's dating Juliet, she is very much on board with it. Here's a quick outline of what you'll find over at AO3.

Any casefic?
A Scandal in Barbaria is a lighthearted adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's A Scandal in Bohemia; it is not part of the Semantics timeline. Load the Dice is part of the Semantics timeline post-show and pre-movies; it's a more serious story wrapped up in a multitude of inappropriate Bible jokes.
The fuck is Semantics?
A series of fics which can generally be read in isolation, but take place in the same timeline. The overarching plot involves Juliet helping Shawn figure out that he's bi and encouraging him to explore his attraction to men, particularly Despereaux. If you're looking for smut, this is where to find it.
The series has a linguistics theme because I am a huge nerd.
Anything else?
Simile was originally a scene in Load the Dice that took a turn I wasn't expecting and led to No Hands, which explores a serious history of mental illness. It takes place in the same timeline as Semantics, but pre-show.
Just take me to the smut already!
Excellent idea. I'll try to keep this updated (edit: I failed to keep this updated but hopefully will soon), but here's the current selection in order of graphic-ness, low to high: Narrative, Aposiopesis (chapter 2), Portmanteau, Not Subject to Truth Conditions, Transitivity and Speech Acts (roughly equivalent to each other), and Lucky. There is a lot more smut in progress, so if you want more, I recommend subscribing.
it is a very well-established headcanon of mine (and canon in all my fics) that shawn spencer is a world-class cunnilingus star, but i think it would be really funny if his first time giving a blowjob he was really bad at it
what if he actually tried it during his High School Experiments With Gus and they both jumped the gun in assuming they were straight because it was so bad? like, neither of them enjoyed it even a little bit, so they assumed it was a sexual orientation thing because they didn't know it was actually a skill issue
i'm thinking it would be like maxxie in skins 1x06 stopping tony mid-blowjob and telling him "we finally found something you're not good at"
honestly one of my favorite things about fanfic is when you can see the canon influences come out in really subtle ways. like a canon line thats mentioned once as a throwaway is suddenly the entire premise for a fic or it influences the characterization or something. its just so cool to see how people weave their ideas around a source material, especially if its not a detail i'd thought about before
if you ever doubt that your ao3 comments matter or mean something: i have been struggling with my writing for 6 months straight, crying myself to sleep afraid that i will never be able to write again, that the thing i love most in the world has left me, that my writing is just gone
this morning i got this comment:
and after i stopped blubbering over it, i picked up my writing notebook, and re-read all my fic research, and opened up my document again for the first time in weeks without being afraid of it
you have no idea how much writers treasure every single comment we get. you have no idea how big an impact you can have. sometimes, just sometimes, your one "insignificant" comment changes everything
Comments make my day. Anything at all is nice, but if someone adds some detail about what they liked—even if it's literally just one sentence—it brings me so much joy and inspiration and excitement, I can't even express it. Please leave comments!
I love writing these two and I love rereading it later.
(From Interlocution)
Despereaux swirled the amber liquid delicately in its crystal glass. “You know, the word ‘masochist’ itself is derived from the name of an author,” he informed Shawn. “Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. He addressed the subject in his novel Venus in Furs, though he was not so immodest as to name the phenomenon after himself; he employed the word supersensual—a rather esoteric philosophical conception of a man who enjoyed suffering. The novel’s protagonist, thought to be based heavily on Leopold himself, was obsessed by images of a beautiful, despotic woman wearing luxuriant fur garments, and sought to bring his fantasies to life by finding himself what one might today call a dominatrix.”
Shawn nodded slowly. “I wore a wolf pelt once,” he supplied after a moment.
Despereaux raised an eyebrow. “Of course,” he intoned in a strange mixture of intrigue and disdain.
“It didn’t make me hungry like one,” Shawn added.

#this is a ship for people with taste
#honestly such a good in character thing for shawn
#Shawn good boy at heart#just shit impulse control
#I do love Shawn doing as he's told#good boy
#like a dog
#the pillow i'm crying
#the pillow grabbing!
#THE PILLOW HUGGING
#i love Shawn's recurring thing about grabbing pillows#like here it has ~implications~ but it's also just a thing he does and it's very cute
#interesting use of the pillow over your lap shawn#hmmmm I wonder why.
#IMMEDIATE obedience. and pierre didn't even have the gun out at that point.#shawn is enthralled by vibes alone.#there is a reason i've had them repeatedly rehash and reminisce about this exact moment in so many of my fics#i also always mention shawn looking for something to hug when he sits down (because that is a thing he always does)#in any given fic of any topic or ship or rating#but i also have confirmed in my fics that the pillow-grabbing in this scene was Urgent for Other Reasons
All of this!!! I always describe Shawn looking for something to hug every time he sits down in one of my fics, which often provides valuable opportunities for comedic asides, but I've also written that it was Urgent for Other Reasons in this scene. I haven't made it canon for the Semantics series because Semantics has established that he was still in oblivious denial at that point, but I did add this in while the two of them are reminiscing about it years later:
“Funny, isn’t it, how you and I both continually return to that exact moment,” he mused. “It’s hardly a traditional meet-cute, but still rather…compelling in its own way, don’t you think?” “Not to put too fine a point on it, Staley, but I think it’s compelling to you and me because we’re perverts.”
(Spoiler alert: “you and me” has the dual purpose of addressing myself and the reader.)
Part of the dialogue I wrote in that scene was inspired by a scene in William Golding's The Princess Bride:
My mind begs you to ask it something so it can obey. Do you want me to follow you for the rest of your days? I will do that. Do you want me to crawl? I will crawl.
Anyway, @violetthediva, could you please link me to the fics in which you address this scene? You know. For science.
Reblogging this to get up on my soapbox for a minute:
I selected "I probably wouldn't orgasm" because "I definitely wouldn't orgasm" wasn't an option. I have primary generalised anorgasmia, which means I have never had an orgasm under any circumstances.
(Pre-empting the frequently asked questions: yes, I'm serious. No, I'm not exaggerating. Not even once, ever, in my entire life. It's not a matter of disinterest; I still desire and enjoy both masturbation and partnered sex, and I'd say I have a medium-high libido. It's also not a trauma/anxiety/dysphoria/purity culture issue for me. I've tried all kinds of different activities, toys, kinks, and types of sexual partner. I'm very familiar with my body and my sexuality, so it's not a lack of understanding of what I enjoy, and I've had more positive sexual experiences over the years than I can begin to count.)
I'm sharing this for two reasons: one, for anyone else who has primary anorgasmia to know that they're not alone, and two, because most people aren't aware that this is a thing. It's really common for people to think that anorgasmia is essentially a skill issue, which…honestly, yeah, for a lot of people it genuinely is because the mixture of sex-negative/purity culture and bioessentialist misogyny and whatnot leads to not having the knowledge and confidence to figure themselves out, but that doesn't mean it's always about that.
I once read a diatribe against the existence of the concept of female sexual dysfunction as a medical issue, arguing that it's just victim-blaming and pathologising, and the author asked women who insist FSD is real why they were determined to believe they were broken. It was a hurtful and infuriating thing to read. I wanted to pose the counterpoint: why are you determined to believe that my physical problem has a psychological cause? Why would my clit be the only part of my body immune to physiological dysfunction?

Kinktober is a kinky October prompt challenge that’s been running in one form or another since 2016. There are three prompts for each day in October, and the challenge is to use one (or more!) of the prompts to create something for that day. If you don’t want to use any of the three daily prompts, you can swap them out for the bonus prompts at the bottom of the prompt list.
If you have any questions, check our FAQs. Unfortunately, due to personal commitments, we won't be opening our askbox for questions this year. We've made it as rules-light as possible, though, so if your question is "Can I do this?", the answer is almost certainly yes!
