Day 2: Competence Porn: Song Ji An (The Silent Sea)

The thing about Dr. Song is that she’s not only competent in both fields she has worked in, but her work ethic and determination to understand what happened on the Moon (and what happened to her sister) is so admirable. Even if she had ulterior reasons to join the mission, she never jeopardize her team, trying her best to study what was happening in order to prevent another disaster. She was the only one able to determine if the samples were good or not, even if sometimes the show made her act in a very unscientific way... Also, this is Bae Doona’s show, and she is so good at it. I love that the story is about her journey and we get to see every part of it, understanding her motivations and fears. Bae Doona is one of the actors I love to see the most because she constantly picks a character that is good at her job, and manages to do something different with it every time. In a way, this is both for Song Ji An as a character, and Bae Doona as an actor. Both amazing.

Day 3: I Just Think She’s Neat: Jung Geum Ja (Hyena)

Watching Hyena this year was such a fun experience, but then I’ve seen so many comments before about how long it would take the viewer to warm up to Geum Ja and it made me confused. What do you mean people didn’t instantly fall in love with her and her antics? Mostly because Hyena is her show and Kim Hye Soo portrays her so well. Being a good lawyer that will do anything to get what she wants, and the show never makes her feel less than others, or bad for wanting the things she wants. Of course, she has to grow too, but Hyena never asks her to forgive her abusive father or to feel sorry for betraying her boyfriend. Even if she feels a bit sorry, I just like how sure of herself she is, how she isn’t afraid of the rich and powerful, how anytime she walks into a room it’s her you see. The colorful clothes, the way she drinks tea, how much she can tell by just a look. Jung Geum Ja is what makes Hyena such a fun show to watch, and I don’t think you need time to get used to her. Everyone around her needs time to understand her way of being, but we, the viewers, can see right away why she is so charming.
