Kdramawomensweek Day 4
Day 4: Favorite Daughter
An oldie but a goodie, Pal Gang from Stars Falling From the The Sky was a charatcer that really grew on me over the course of 20 episodes. She was left with nothing from her parents death except for 4 other kids to take care of, and she took on that role hesitantly, but not because she didn’t love her siblings but because she felt like she wasn’t equipped to raise them. But over the course of this drama, Pal Gang did everything in her power to keep her siblings because that is what her parents would have wanted, which makes her an a+ daughter in my book even through her struggles

Day 3: The Narrator
Is it really a kdramawomensweek if I don’t talk about Flower Boy Next Door? Well, Dok Mi is the undisputed narrator of this show. Quite literally, a lot of the narration comes from her diaries and it gives us a look into her character that she doesn’t let any other character know, and I think it was a really cool way to let us know the psychology behind a character who talked very little.

Kdramawomensweek Day 2
Day 2: Transformation
I can’t talk about women without mention what’s looking to be my drama of the year (even though the finale was in January, oh well). I’m such a sucker for emotionally closed off women learning that it’s okay to love and make themselves vulnerable, and Soo Hyun from Encounter did this trope really, really well. I won’t pretend that a lot of her growth didn’t come from Jin Hyuk, but I like to think of it more as him helping her realize she could help herself rather than him saving her.
I think what I liked most about her and this drama was how subversive it was. Not only was Soo Hyun the cold one, but she was also a divorcee and the CEO of her own company. I found her endlessly fascinating and someone I was rooting for every step of the way. She had such a compelling emotional arc that I was never bored with and I firmly believe we need more heroines like her

Kdramawomensweek Day 1
Day 1: Monster Girls
This was one I had to think long and hard about, since supernatural ladies are fairly popular drama characters, but a really stand out duo for me is Seon Mi and Bu Ja from Hwayugi. this is less about them as monsters, though both have supernatural powers. Their relationship was really something special and consistent throughout a series that really lacked structure, and there was one moment in particular that really sold me on these characters.
This moment comes on the back of a male character using Seon Mi to keep Bu Ja alive without her knowledge or consent, and it is a moment that could really only exist between two women with unconditional love and trust. I can’t think of a charatcer other than Seon Mi who would respond to someone trying to kill her (even though it wasn’t Bu Ja’s fault) with nothing except compassion. The way Seon Mi holds her, with absolute forgiveness and protectiveness over a young woman is something that sticks with me almost a year later. And Bu Ja holds her back, accepting Seon Mi’s love even if she doesn’t particularly deserve it in this moment.
This show’s biggest weakness was that it had an excellent ensemble of women that never seemed to ally with each other, but this moment right here is the clearest example of two women who’ve been given a shit lot and little support learning to support each other

#kdramawomensweek day two: resistance A character who defies power—maybe she leads or is part of a revolution, maybe she goes up against her boss or her parents, maybe she says no to some guy who’s interested in her, maybe she flouts convention in the way she looks or speaks, maybe what she’s fighting against is fate itself.
“I was going to have my men chop off that hand which was the first one that has ever struck my face but I decided to let you keep it since you’ll need it to shake people’s hands during your campaign. Take good care of it. Because I’ll come back to claim it once you won’t need it for things like that anymore.” → Choi Yoo Jin, The K2
#kdramawomensweek day one: mentorship A character who commands or deserves authority and respect and is generous enough to share her knowledge with others; or, a character who receives mentorship from someone who believes in them or challenges them. → Lee Jin Sook, Heartless City

I think it’s important to mention that Dramafever...
Then they should act like it. If you have an exclusive, use it and don’t tie it up so that others can’t watch. Even if it’s on a delay because you’re busy, at least add it to the list.
I’m gonna watch the show anyway because I don’t mind watching it raw, but I know so many people will pass on this show just because there’s no easy access to it. Which makes me mad because it’s good and yet there’ll be no fandom for it.
