This past weekend, I had the opportunity to shoot some video of my neighbor’s son doing some awesome tricks with a YoYo. When we first discussed it, I immediately knew that I wanted to shoot the video at a high frame rate so that I could slow the video and, hopefully, create some cool slo-motion video. So, I decided to use my iPhone 6 and the Filmic Pro app for the job.
On the iPhone 6, the fastest frame rate available is 240 FPS, but you have to cut the resolution to 720p to get that high frame rate. I figured it would be OK since 720p is still considered to be an HD resolution. I think it helps that the YoYo string is neon green; it really shows up nicely in the video. I had the iPhone mounted on a FeiyuTech G4 Pro gimbal stabilizer to minimize camera shake.
I’m pretty happy with the results. One thing I noticed though is that, in the second slow motion sequence, you can see the camera attempt to refocus at a couple of points. In hindsight, I should have used the feature in Filmic Pro to lock the focus to prevent this.
The video is about 5 minutes long. You can see it here, or by clicking on the photo above.
Special thanks to Jono Gorzny for the YoYo performance. It was awesome!
