Elder Ted Reccollet retrieved my name for me the other day. He was surprised how fast it came to him, but I wasn't. I had meditated on the sema for a year or more before I finally had the courage to ask. When I asked him if there was a song or story to go with it, he laughed because Gabadin means crusting snow, and winter is the time of story-telling. But his answer was that there are many stories, and it is up to me to seek them out by talking to creation.
So I did some research. And crusty snow is an important part of winter. The structural integrity of crusty snow allows for small animals to tunnel beneath it to seek shelter and store resources, and facilitates movement for those above. Predators like lynx and wolves find it easy to cross the crust, while large prey animals punch the surface and sink right through it, providing predators with a chance to eat.
So what I understand is that part of my purpose is to support others and facilitate access to resources, however that all depends on me maintaining my integrity. This means knowing when to say no, and take care of myself.
