The fire danced. Glass and wax and the reflection of the movie all mixing against the candle, "What did you do with him today?," playing above us. She's leaning against the bar with her smile shined to no one in particular. Bright as ever. Lost & lovely.

CheapBracelets&ShittyParkingJobs. Blurred hands and shakey steering wheels. I'm guilty and I'm sleepy and I'm ready to keep going. These lines on the pavement pretend to be suggestions. These drives through the city pretend to be my lessons. I'm a king. I'm a king. And I feel untouchable.

{ The Sounds and I. }

It sounds the same. Maybe that's the part that's most off-putting. The street still slips the sounds of seagulls and busy intersections into my apartment. It sounds the same. But it feels different. Maybe it was the way the sounds danced across your body as you slept. Maybe these sounds are looking around my place for you. Maybe they got too used to the way they could dance from my arm to your chest as we laid together in bed, hiding from the morning. That must be it. The sounds are dancing across me. Treating my arm like a bridge. But at the end of the road is just my bed. No pretty girl on top of the covers. Just a well dressed drunk watching the sounds from the street dance alone. And so we sit together. The sounds and I. Waiting for our friend. To come back and dance again.

The Ghosts in My Pocket

My phone holds the ghosts of the girls whose names I’ve forgotten. I think that, sometimes it remembers bits of conversation out of context. And tries to figure out why so many new voices became quiet. My phone doesn’t understand love. My phone can’t turn heartbreak into regret. Or epiphanies into beauty. My phone is made of memories. And will never make sense of which names will become ghosts. Or why I would ever want to forget them.

My memory is so fickle. Add two pints of mixed liquor and you’ve got a board that erases anything written every five minutes. My eyes hit refresh. I take a breath. And try to remember why I walked into this particular room.
