October 23, 2019 - Barau's Petrel (Pterodroma baraui)

Breeding primarily on the island of Réunion, these petrels are found in the subtropical and tropical Indian Ocean. Though the details of their diet are not well known, they probably eat fish and squid, capturing prey at the water’s surface alone or in small flocks. Breeding from around September through April, they nest colonially in burrows under vegetation, where both parents care for the eggs and chicks. They are classified as Endangered by the IUCN due primarily to threats from invasive mammals and light pollution that disorients young birds. Hunting has also impacted their population in the past and climate change is likely to threaten it in the future.
