Gai Jatra Festival

Bhaktapur celebrating Gaijatra festival 2017

Gai (cow) Jatra is a festival celebrated in all the cities within Kathmandu Valley and some outside the valley. In this festival, a family of deceased takes part in a procession representing a cow.

It is believed that the tradition was started by a king to show his wife, whose son had died, that there are many people in his kingdom whose relatives or loved ones have died too. This helped the queen to get out of the grief. Since then the people, particularly of Newar community takes part in this procession to convey the message that we have also lost some one in our family and urges others to accept the reality of death.

Bhaktapur Gaijatra is special, entertaining and satiric compared to other cities of Valley.
