H☆S Award: recipe to make Yoshihiro Togashi (1991) PART 1
In 1991, Togashi drew five 4-koma in the WSJ issues #43 to #47 to give the Hop☆Step Award participants some advice on how to become a mangaka. He talked about his first works and the awards he got, before creating Yu Yu Hakusho.
Since my work schedule has been crazy, I'll be translating these comic strips slowly, starting with Part I of the series: "Cooking a Manga Artist - The Recipe to Make Yoshihiro Togashi".
Don't forget to also check the H☆S Award - Special Advice from Yoshihiro Togashi (1992). That's more five 4-koma he drew in 1992, using the Dark Tournament Teams as plot to give the aspiring manga artists some advice on creating manga.

T/N:
⋆ On Togashi's hat is written the character "漫". It's the syllable "man" from the word "manga". He is dressed like master Genkai, who has the character "霊" ("rei": spirit) on her hat.
⋆ Tatsuhiko Yamagami is a manga artist, writer and novelist, who became famous for his gag manga during the 70s. One of his most famous works is "Gaki Deka", a gag manga developed by the main character, Komaru-kun, who claims to be Japan's first boy police officer.
⋆ The late Toshimasa Takahashi worked in the editorial department of the Weekly Shounen Jump in the 80s. He was Togashi's first editor and was promoted to editor-in-chief of the magazine in 2001.
⋆ When "Sensee wa Toshishita" was released as an extra in the volume 4 of "Ten de wa Shouwaru Cupid" tankoubon, a rumor began to circulate that this was actually Togashi's first submission to the Hop Step Award. Togashi confirms the rumor. He was one the final candidates for the 20th H☆S Award in 1986. Finalists also win a cash prize. Apparently, he won 26,000 yen.
