I heard 3 years between 1 and 2, and a year between 2 and 3? Sorry to bother you, but I recently discovered SW and have all these questions, and you seem to be the most knowledgeable person on the subject I know. Thank you! :)

Welcome to the fandom and all the Luke Love I have to offer you on my blog <3 Thank you for the kind words but I get most of my knowledge of stuff like timelines and minutiae from Wookieepedia, which is a bastion of ridiculous information and lots of fun when you need to know, for example, what kind of technological innards the droid you want Luke to bang has XD
There are definitely folks who think more about this stuff on tumblr than I do, but I’ll take a stab at it for ya ;) When I’m writing fic I use the three main battles between the Empire and the Rebels as my touchstones for timelines, which gives you an original trilogy timeline spanning about five years, with the largest gap between ANH and ESB. Here’s what the internet gods of Wook say:
The Battle of Yavin, which is the timeline scale (I know they recently tried to change the dating system... but... *pushes that away* when Luke blows up the Death Star, is year 0. I don’t think there is a huge amount of time covered in ANH, so let’s say that’s eight months max from Leia’s ship getting captured to Death Star blowing up (and I would guess it’s more like 3 months max but trying to be generous here--let’s just give Luke some time to enlist, I guess? Have his basic training?). Someone may know more precisely and I imagine that it’s been discussed and dissected to death, so I’m just giving you my thoughts here :)
The Battle of Hoth is in 3 ABY (After the Battle of Yavin) and yay an excuse to throw a Hoth gif in here cause I love Hoth--so there’s our largest gap in the timeline, three and a half to four years (remember you have to count year zero as a year, so 1 ABY would be one year after the battle, etc.).
and the Battle of Endor, per Legends Canon (which is “my” canon) was in year 4 (4 ABY 1 year after Hoth).
So you are looking at about 5ish years overall to go from this:
