MFSB MFSB (short for “Mother, Father, Sister, Brother”) although schoolyard rumours would have had this stand for “Mother Fucking Son of a Bitch” or, in Northern Soul circles in England it stood for “Music For Soul Brothers”) A large group of American session musicians out of Philadelphia, backing up a great amount of groups in the Philadelphia area in the 70s. Originally they were the backing band for Cliff Nobles & Co. In the late 60s. They were based at Philadelphia’s famed Sigma Sound Studios, and worked closely with the production team of Gamble and Huff and producer/arranger Thom Bell. Among the names the have been working with, are typical Philly sound groups and artist like: Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, the O’Jays, The Stylistics, The Spinners, Wilson Pickett, and Billy Paul. In 1971 MFSB recorded a cover of “The Nite-Liters's” (later “New Birth”) instrumental "K-Jee", which gained some popularity when it was featured in a key scene in the film Saturday Night Fever (1977). In the start 70s MFSB started recording for the “Philadelphia International” label. "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)", "TSOP" was influential in establishing the disco sound. This single “Let’s go Disco” from 1975 written by C. Gilbert*, G. McFadden*, J. Whitehead*, L. Huff*, V. Carstarphen*, is an instrumental version of Archie Bell & The Drell’s version of the same number. This track contains a very insistent rhythm, which is almost impossible not to dance to... I love this track ... the Archie version is good as well.
