Chen stood within the training grounds as he stares at his men who were practicing their swordsmanship and defense techniques. Chen was mostly found in this area where there are weapons present and restless soldiers training. An environment Chen didn’t mind being in and actually prefers rather than what his older brother does; being constantly prepared to be the next Lord of House Chen. A burden Chen was grateful for not having.
It was clear where he belonged. Chen was known for being a quick learner when it came to combat skills; this was established when he was fairly young. When Lord Ryuu noticed this in his youngest son, he knew instantly he was suited for the battlefield. The fighting skills came naturally for Chen so it was inevitable that the responsibility to train the knights was place on his shoulders despite his age. Everyone respects that Lord Ryuu's youngest son was the one to help bring victory to their skirmishes and the eldest be the one to lead The Burning Woods due to his natural leadership skills and charming nature. It would seem that if the oldest and youngest sons were one person, it would have been the most ideal leader that would have ruled House Chen. But even when they lacked in each other’s strength, it’s when they are together that they are at their strongest; the strength of two brothers.
Usually Chen enjoys being with his men as they trained together, but today didn’t call for it. Though his eyes were on the soldiers, his mind was wandering elsewhere; a time in which his older brother and father last spoke. It had taken place on the same day, just only a few hours ago. Chen was standing beside his father as his older brother, again, requested a journey to the Firefields in hopes to negotiate for an alliance. His older brother's words were remembered clearly by Chen who replays it over and over, repetitively in his head as his eyes stares blankly ahead.
"You brought this up many times already, Zhou." Their father heaved slowly, frustration showing in his voice. "And I always say that it's not going to work out as you believe." His father sat on his throne, as Chen stood beside him, looking down to his older brother. Their father aged with wisdom over the years and experience many things as Lord of The Burning Woods. Chen doesn't doubt their father’s authority or his belief. Chen puts his faith in the choices his father offers to the kingdom. And he stood by his father from the time he was old enough to hold a sword. But it is today that marks a change. As Chen studies his older brother’s face, a part of him agrees with his brother’s notion. He believes that an alliance can be form. That the Dragons and Phoenixes can unite with the Foxes.
"I understand Father, but this is a new age, and the conflict between the houses is a thing of the past." Zhou's voice was firm while his topaz eyes stare sternly at the stubborn Lord that sat before him. "I am confident House Wong will approve. If only I can speak with them to compromise an agreement." Chen watches as his older brother expression stayed put, unbothered by their father who was now shaking his head in disapproval.
The room was silent for a moment before Chen notice the Lord letting a heavy sigh escape his lips. "It is clear that you will continue to push forward for this request due to the countless times you've brought the matter up." Lord Ryuu stated, as he massaged his aching temples. "Therefore… I surrender my efforts to stop you and have decided to let you do as you please." Zhou face brightens and was about to share his gratitude, only to be cut short by the Lord’s harsh words. "But do not misunderstand. I still believe this is a foolish idea. I am only letting you do what you want so you can finally see it yourself that your efforts are in vain. I will arrange a small party for your thoughtless quest and set a day for your departure."
Chen watches as his older brother place a weak, defeating smile on his face before he bowed to their father. He was going to accept this small approval, even though he knew his father despised everything about it. “That will do fine. Thank you for your consent, father. I will do you proud.”
Chen’s face grimaced while his gaze follows his brother’s back as he made his way towards the door. Chen’s eyes fell to the floor when his older brother finally exited the room. With his hands clenched in tight fists and his eyebrows furrow together, Chen thoughts became erratic with worry.
Was this a good idea…?
