Game of Beards
Game of Beards
This was written for fun immediately after season finale. Meant to make me feel better about tonight before I went to sleep.
"I’m pregnant!" Jane let it burst from her mouth. Maura stood stunned long enough that Jane realized that she’d gone too far with the game. "I’m just joking. I thought that might get a rise out of you."
"Jane, this is difficult enough as it is. So how did you let Caseyuck down anyway? We let this one go on far too long." Maura gave a long tired breath and walked over to Jane’s sofa and sat down. Jane watched her go and wondered about who else they would recruit into their Operation Deflector Shield - Game of Beards.
"I told him I didn’t like his constant sweating and said I couldn’t imagine sleeping next his damp body every night." Jane almost started to laugh but she knew what she’d said was kinda mean. He is the one who crossed the line with threatening to quit the military and actually be HOME. She couldn’t let that happen and let the pretend relationship go on.
"Jane, you didn’t!"
"No, I didn’t say that, but I did tell him it was over. What is it about these guys begging for attention but then they have to get all serious? Why do they all decide they have to go and fall in love with us?"
"Don’t you think this game we play is cruel, Jane?"
"No, I don’t. If they are fool enough to ask me out more than five times after I’ve refused then they deserve what they get."
"I’d just rather we stopped the game. We live in Massachusetts. Gay marriage is legal. Revealing our five-year relationship might cause a shock at first, but people will get over it."
"Well, I’m not ready. I’ll find another one, or one will find me and we will keep playing this game."
"Maybe I don’t want to continue this farce, Jane. Maybe I want to be able to take you out on legitimate dates and kiss you in public and hold your hand. Maybe I want all that goes with being in love with someone. ALL the things Jane."
"Maura, I don’t think I can. Not yet. I need my deflector shield. Maura, he was so perfect. He was gone all the time and I could just hold up a picture of my war hero boyfriend and I never even had to actually spend time with him. Babe, you and I could spend all our time together and everybody was afraid to question the woman with the soldier for a boyfriend." Jane sat down next to Maura and moved her hair off her shoulder and smiled. "And you were the valiant friend standing by your best friend."
"When will you find another one like Caseyuck? He was a ghost. I liked him that way. Just tell people you have a boyfriend. Does the guy have to be real? People rarely found opportunity to meet him anyway."
"We can wait a while. This one had an impact I think."
"Jane, Captain Beard was a decent man, but in a few months after people who know you forget about him in your life, we will be back to the way things were and what if people start to question your sexuality again? Sooner or later, people are going to find out." She let out another frustrated huff. "Seriously, Jane. You need to get over your fear of coming out and just COME OUT."
Jane reached for Maura’s hands and held them up in front of her face. “Maura, I can’t yet. I will admit it, I’m still chicken.”
Maura went along with this charade for Jane, but for how much longer? She was thinking she might just do something to force the issue.
Emergency fix. InappropriateSugartits and I gave each other a quick time limit to fix this. (I hope she publishes her fix as well. Hers is actually worth reading. We all need it.) This is my quick fix to get me through tonight. I didn’t like Frankie. I didn’t like having to see the ring. I didn’t like Maura being all nice about it and planning a shower *gag* and then the baby thing. I was not happy.
If you can’t tell by now, this story was a JOKE so I could happily rest my head on my pillow and fall asleep.
