Which controllers do you think has the best and worst d-pad?
Nintendo used to make the best d-pad in the biz. On the SNES, on the Gameboy, on the DS. Not too elevated, responsive, accurate, no sharp corners, no excessive gaps. Comfortable.
There are too many bad d-pads to single one out.
The Dreamcast had a horrible d-pad. It was four feet tall, mushy, off-balance and left indentations in your skin from its sharp corners. Just looking at it makes my thumbs feel sore.
The d-pad on the Xbox 360 controller was a nightmare. It’s less of a d-pad and more like an 8-way joystick they put a weird d-pad shaped cap on. It was nice and soft on the thumbs, but impossible to get accurate inputs out of. For d-pad-centric games, I ended up buying a third party controller with a better d-pad.
Listen, I love the Dualshock. Overall, it might be my favorite controller of any game console ever made. I prefer its analog stick and d-pad positions and its a bummer the Xbox configuration is also what Nintendo uses now. But there’s no denying that this d-pad gave me many sore thumbs and even blisters after repeated sessions of Darkstalkers and X-men vs. Street Fighter. It’s those little gaps in the center of the d-pad that do it; it creates too many ridges for your thumb, so if you’re rolling lots of QCFs you end up raw after an hour or two.

I wish my gamepads worked on my MacBook Air. They worked fine on my mid-2012 laptop, but something about the M1 chip is keeping me from being able to use them on the new one. OpenEmu recognizes the controller when I set it up, but once I play a game, it doesn't respond to my button pressing. It just... assumes I'm using the keyboard instead???
Maybe I should just ask for a Windows laptop the next time I need a new computer. Preferably one that's gaming-quality.
