Hey. You’re cool. Just sayin’.
18. A random headcanon
The industrial manufacturing arm of what was previously known as Kaiba Heavy Industries still exists, but no longer creates weapons. The huge manufacturing plants keep the assembly of Duel Disks in-company, thus KC has better quality control and keeps trade secrets safer than if manufacturing was outsourced. But beyond the entertainment branch, KC has not dropped all its engineering contracts, just the defense contracts. KC still produces ATC systems, aerospace components, space launch vehicles, satellites and spacecraft. Perhaps it has something to do with the CEO’s fascination with the skies, and the future. Kaiba’s jet comes from the same factories, and the fighter jet was the last piece of war machinery ever commissioned there.
KC’s ticker symbol on the Japanese Nikkei stock exchange is KAIH, reflecting the Kaiba Corporation’s original name.
24. Unpopular opinion?
If you say Seto Kaiba instead of Kaiba Seto then say Katsuya Jounouchi, not Jounouchi Katsuya. Katsuya is his first name. 🤓
33. Favourite quote from a YGO character
“If God stands in your way, mow him down!”
btw I just binge read xParrot's fanfic, "Legally Insane" omg hands down one of the best fanfics I've read 👌👌👌
✋Stop. Don’t even talk to me until you’ve read them all. After that, hit up Mighty Wings by Madam Hydra.

I wrote a fic based on an ask @gamesetomatch got because I really liked the premise of it!! Also it’s been a really long time since I’ve written a fanfic so I thought, why not?
19.75 million people packed into 304.6 square miles. Countless masses. Seemingly infinite bodies. Faces blur from one to the other. Even the head of a multi-national gaming company can get lost in crowd. But it’s exactly the reason why business meetings in New York are so ideal; in California, the chance of getting recognized still runs high, but not in New York. Never in New York.
Although it wasn’t his first choice, Seto decided to take the subway from his hotel to the meeting in some Wall Street building. Sometimes he wants to plan ahead in case of getting caught in traffic. Sometimes he wants to feel the privacy of being a part of a large public space. Something he read in a Fitzgerald novel: “I like large parties. They’re so intimate.”
“I like your coat,” a voice says, interrupting mundane thoughts. “Burberry, right?”
Seto looks to his left as a young man no older than 25 moves closer to him - the train was getting more and more filled. An art student judging by the large portfolio he has, the paint tattered backpack seated on his lap, and the clean, albeit still too wet, paintbrushes he was holding. Seto, dumbfounded by this interaction, only gave a tentative nod to the stranger. He didn’t even look at Seto completely. Just a small side glance before looking forward again.
“You seem more like a Tom Ford kinda guy to be honest,” the man started again.
“What do you think the brand of this suit is?” Seto retorted, voice devoid of any amusement or any emotion. Who the fuck is this guy? Does he even know who he’s talking to?
The man finally looks at Seto again, only scanning him before looking ahead again. “Oh, sorry, didn’t notice the suit.”
“It’s fi-”
“Your whole outfit is like a Bond villain’s,” he interrupted.
“What?” Now he can’t keep the annoyance or confustion out of his voice.
“Yeah, Javier Bardem’s character in Skyfall.”
“I liked the first film in the Craig series.”
“So do I; it subverts a lot of typical Bond tropes,” the stranger replies finally looking at Seto again. Who is he? Why is he talking to me?
Seto can only give a dismissive “yeah” in agreement. The conversation will be dead soon anyway; he has three more stops before his destination.
The stranger is still staring at Seto. It’s becoming slightly unnerving. “You nervous about something?”
A mild chuckle. “I’m never nervous.”
“Then is picking your nails just a bad habit I presume?”
He didn’t even notice he was doing that.
“I guess I’ve got a lot on my mind.”
“Tell me.”
Although this guy is a complete and utter stranger, the idea of talking to someone who has no idea who he is seemed cathartic. “I can’t disclose business, and I don’t want to delve too much into my personal life. What do you want to hear?”
“That’s understandable, but, like, anything really.”
Seto started thinking. “Yesterday I gave a fake name at Starbucks because I know the cashier wouldn’t spell my name right.” That was lame. “But I don’t even like Starbucks.” Shut up; you’re far more interesting than that. “And last week my younger brother won his first chess match against me.” I thought I said no delving too much into my personal life?
“Really?” the stranger asked, leaning a bit into the aisle to look at Seto more. “Never purposely lost just to make him feel better?”
Seto smirked. “Only as children. He figured out at some point; we spend our Saturdays together and sometimes play chess.”
“Oh, reminds me of this book I read as a child,” the stranger smiles back.
“Okay, but what about you? What’s your story?” Seto finally asked. No more delving into my personal life.
“Well… for starters… you can already tell I’m an art student, bu-”
“Obviously.”
“But I also work at a restaurant,” he finished.
Seto only raised one eyebrow.
“It’s skeleton themed for some reason. There’s a live band that plays and they dress in black and paint themselves white with skull makeup as well.”
Now both eyebrows are up.
“I like working there: it feels like a home. And that’s actually where I’m headed to right now.”
Seto was about to say something but a voice on the speakers interrupted him. The train slowed to a stop. The stranger got up and took his portfolio, taking the strap and putting it on his shoulder. “Well, this is my stop.”
Seto nodded as a farewell. “It was nice conversing to you.”
The man was already by the door about to step off onto the platform. “And you too. Thanks for the talk, Mr. Kaiba.”

gamesetomatch!
Thank you so much! I love your headcanon posts, especially the ones about the Kaiba brothers’ early life; the orphanage one really got to me.
Seto Kaiba
How do I feel about this character:
I don’t think I’ve ever had a fictional character resonate so deeply. He’s such an amazing combination of strength and vulnerability. He expresses some of the darker thoughts people have as when he says that we can only love ourselves in the moment of victory, and some of the most hopeful as when he says that what’s in the hearts of men can surpass even the gods.
What do I like/admire about this character:
Kaiba struggles. Constantly. But through every dash in the wrong direction and blundering misstep, he somehow manages to keep moving forward. He came from being a penniless orphan betrayed by everyone around him to rise to being the CEO of an international corporation – and to then changed the nature of that corporation from the death to games. And he does it all while wearing his damage as if it was one of his trenchcoats. It would make sense, given all he’s accomplished if he never questioned a single thing about his life or his beliefs. Instead he’s constantly searching for a better way to live, for a way to reach a truer future.
I also have a tremendous soft spot for fictional brothers who are trying to raise each other, and the Kaibas are the best. The truth is that Kaiba is way too young and emotionally damaged himself to raise a child – but he not only does it, but looks on it as a privilege. And the one thing that is evident in any version is that Mokuba never doubts, despite everything, that Kaiba loves him. It amazes me that Kaiba has somehow managed, despite everything going on around them and even his own surrender to darkness, to provide Mokuba with the stability that has enabled his younger brother to grow into such a secure, resourceful and loyal person.
What do I dislike about this character:
His cruelty. Both the manga and anime do a wonderful job of showing why Kaiba would confuse kindness with weakness and cruelty with strength – and why someone who has met with cruelty so often in life, would see it as a routine part of how you communicate with people. but the bottom line is when given a choice of saying something hurtful or simply keeping his mouth shut, Kaiba often chooses to be cruel, and I think he should be responsible for the decisions he continues to make.
Favourite moment for this character:
This one is always hard for me to choose. Today’s pick is the moment in Noa’s Arc when Kaiba is facing Daimon (Leichter in the dub) from the Big 5. Daimon has just taken Kaiba through all of the darkest moments of his time with Gozaburo, scenes designed to convince him that he’s not any different from his adoptive father. The whole duel is very much about Kaiba’s ability to become more than a collection of his worst actions, so when he calls on his Blue Eyes White Dragon to destroy Daimon’s Satellite Cannon, screaming that he won’t be part of a war machine any longer, I feel like cheering, no matter how many times I watch it.
Who I ship romantically with this character and why:
Major League Prideshipping Alert!
Odd as this sounds, for me, Prideshipping starts with Death-T, if not at the first penalty a game. After Death-T, Yami no Yugi is literally in touch with Kaiba’s soul, intending to destroy him as a punishment… and somehow, beyond all expectation, Yami sees something worth saving instead… something Kaiba, by this point, probably doesn’t see in himself.
There’s also a sense that these two accept each other on some basic level, even as they challenge each other. And they’re not simply pushing each other to become better duelists, but to to also understand themselves and become stronger people. There’s a scene in the manga when they arrive at Alcatraz where Kaiba talks about how Gozaburo used his designs for war. Yugi looks at his duel disk, horrified, and thinks how he never imagined it could have such an ugly history. It’s not hard to imagine Yugi’s thinking about Kaiba as well. Part of me was sorry that Yami wasn’t the one there at that moment. Because throughout all Yami has seen of Kaiba, throughout all he has heard, he never has that reaction. But at the same time, Yami never hesitates to call Kaiba out when he feels that he’s falling short of the person he could be, he never stops pushing Kaiba to re-evaluate his philosophies – and Kaiba honestly needs both that acceptance and that challenge.
At the same time, at so many of the darkest points in Yami’s life, at so many moments when he feels helpless and hopeless, Kaiba is the one to get him moving again. Yami says that Yugi is stronger than him, but Kaiba is the only person he acknowledges as an equal. The dynamic between them is so complex and so intense, I can’t resist adding a romantic attraction.
Who are my platonic ships for this character and why:
The closest thing I have to a platonic OTP for Kaiba is Sugoroku. I really love writing them getting to know each other. Sugoroku is the only character old enough to think of Kaiba as a kid his grandson’s age, while still being able to understand Kaiba’s struggles to be a parent to Mokuba.
I also think if there’s one thing that Kaiba needs more than a romantic interest, it’s a supportive adult/quasi-parental figure, because that’s the one thing he’s missed for practically his entire childhood. There’s something profoundly sad about Kaiba growing up without the experience of having any adult making his well-being their priority. Kaiba gets chided throughout the series (and often in fandom) for his insistence that he can only rely on himself, but this is where it springs from. Although Kaiba would deny the need for a caring adult in his life, I’d like to see him get a taste of it. And I think Sugoroku, who ate Jounouchi and his rebel without a cause attitude for breakfast, would definitely be able to handle Kaiba.
And then of course, there’s the BEWD connection.
I also like Kaiba and Yugi as friends, because it’s hard to imagine two characters with less in common in term experience, philosophy or personality. I think there’s a lot they could learn from each other.
Things done in fanfiction with this character that annoy me:
I talked about some of the things that annoy me in an earlier post, but I decided to expand on it here (lol). Since he was a young child, Kaiba has never had anyone, beyond his younger brother, really care about him. I think what he truly needs is not just to learn how to trust, but to have people in his life who are trustworthy, who genuinely care about him and who take his needs, especially his emotional needs seriously. But so often the stories I see that have Kaiba in a relationship have his partner mock him, laugh at his concerns, blackmail him emotionally or otherwise, break his confidences – and this is all seen as being for his own good. While I can see Kaiba easily being in a bad relationship – mainly because he has so little experience with good ones, it bothers me that these relationships are so portrayed as fluffy or as what Kaiba needs to “learn his lesson.” Actually, I think that the knowledge that given the chance, there are people who will chose to humiliate him is a lesson he’s already absorbed.
Things done in fanfiction with this character I want to see more of:
I really love character driven stories. I love stories where Kaiba is learning to accept himself and his past, where he is genuinely moving towards that true future he talks about throughout Battle City. I also like stories that show what a struggle this is, stories that hit me in the gut and make me really feel how hard it is for him to let down his guard, how truly terrifying it is, and how he would seesaw between the certainty that he will suffer for any display of openness and the tentative hope that this time would be better. I like stories that treat Kaiba with the thoughtfulness that he has so rarely been shown in his life.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 😄 Hope it's an awesome one! ✨🍰
