Hello everyone! Sprite artist and revisionist of Deltarune: Meme Edition™ here. I'm here to talk about what it takes to become one of us. Be warned: The challenges that you must endure to even be considered to join us, The Absolute Units, are not for the faint-hearted and only those who are masters of their craft will be considered worthy!!!!
Okay, I am just messing with you. All you have to do is have fun and be passionate and open-minded about learning about what you are pursuing. Take it from me, someone who has never worked on a project like this or has even done pixel art before I joined the repaint, but now, I am one of the cool kids. So please, do not feel discouraged if you think your art is not good enough. We are here to show you the ropes not only for sprite art but art in general + how to work smoothly with the team.
Before we talk about the art itself, let's talk about the ideas that lead to the art:
We love your ideas! We want to make you feel heard and be a part of the repaint. We will do everything we can to let your ideas appear on the repaint in one way or another, however, something important to remember when you are a part of any project, that being, game development, movie/tv show directing, etc, is that not every single idea can be included. The directions of a project change and some ideas must be let go, or in the best case scenario, be executed in a different way. If that occurs, please understand that it is not our intent to dismiss you or diminish your involvement in the repaint. We just want to make sure everything added to the game fits seamlessly with the environment and with the established lore.
Having that out of the way, let's get to the fun part: Sprite Making!
If you are new to sprite making, we recommend using either an art program that you are already used to working with or Aseprite.
In this repaint, we have a specific art style that we must follow (except on rare occasions).
1st and foremost: Follow the color palette.
Clove has taken the time to make color palettes for each zone in the game.
You must limit yourself only to the colors given on the respective palettes. They were made both to ensure the places and the characters are easy on the eyes and to add a bit of a fun challenge to teach you a little something about color harmony and theory.
This above is one of clove’s previous works given new color with usage of TFD ( Toby Fox Dithering/Edge shading ) and
This form of shading will be used in the great majority of the sprites made for the simple reason that it just looks so clean and appealing to look at.

So pretty much, this is the first one of the series of ???. If I will be honest, I never have done these things as I really wanted to make a devbook instead of a blog. But anywho, here we are! So just now, we started back the project just now and so far, it has been pretty good. Susie’s repainted design however, was not complete; in fact, it was missing quite a lot of sprites. So, due to that problem, I really had to make sure that the entirety of Susie’s character gets finished (however that is stretching it since there is 79 sprites remaining). Kris’s repaint design itself is already being handled by fm_toast, and well, since they are technically the original one behind Kris Zero, it felt right to let them back their creation. Luckily, Niko (Ralsei’s repainted design) got finished by Cole, so that is one thing off the radar! In other news, the main things that need to get done on my end are:
- Revamp Noelle, and finish other characters that I was in charged in doing
- Go over with Cole changes to certain Alex Yiik portraits.
- Direct orders to revitalize and refurbish some assets from very long ago.
- Revamp Spamton’s repainted design entirely to fit with the new palette.
Hopefully, we can get through this efficiently, but if I’ll be frank, developing this kind of stuff is hard. It can get really hard to direct things to be in the places you want to be, but if that’s what it takes to get anywhere, then so be it! Hey nuderalerters, production coordinator and general details manager of the more technical side of the repaint here.
First off, special thanks to Clove for letting me write one of these, I hope I’ll be writing far more than one but for now, here’s an intro to tilesets, how we go about working on them and the misery of organisation.
Amidst most of the sprites of the game, a large majority of sprites that are not considered a “room” or “object” are primarily sorted into tilesets, which in theory would help organise. As each tile in a tileset is 44 by 44 pixels (22 by 22 when correctly sized) it should be great! One problem… This is what some of them look like! A mess! A complete goddamn mess!
[Clove: The worst part about this project is the de-scrambling of these monstrosities.]
Each tileset is uncharacteristically jumbled up and completely messed with to the point where it would be practically impossible to edit in this form. That’s where organisation comes in and where what I’ve been doing since the project’s hiatus ended.
However there is a way to make this easier for everyone involved. With each tile being 44 by 44, I can slot the tiles that work together to form a cohesive larger sprite for people to work on.
- By separating the tilesets into separate sprites, more people can work on individual portions of a tileset, leading to the entire project team being able to work on ideas, which makes me happy.
- Its simple enough to slot back into place, requiring me to take the repainted tiles and add them back to the jumble mess above.
Anyways, that about covers the joys of tilesetting and the troubles they bring.

Hello everyone!! You may be asking about this account in particular, or this case, what it is. Well, as told by the description, this is the official devblog for Deltarune Repainted. I am Clover (she/her), and I direct, lead, write lore and I do a handful of things for this project. Me, alongside many other friends and co-workers have been going at this project for several months. 7 months even!! Pretty much as a quick recap, for most of the development, we tended to seclude ourselves from the public eye as it was mainly for privacy and setting up. Before we had the chance to make a twitter or anything of that sort, we really wanted to organize the place to really befit the entirety of what it meant to be “a organization”. So now, that we have pretty much settled things, we can finally show off way more than we could have 7 months prior.
