If you own a copy of Animal Crossing New Horizons on the Nintendo Switch you may have encountered the challenge on island design. There are a few good tools that can help you out. One I've found is called the Happy Island Designer!
This is a web based application created by Eugeneration. This allows folks to plan out their island designs in advance (or later in game). It is a 2D version of the map where folks can plan the rivers, lakes/ponds, housing, shops, foliage, and mountains/hills. I like how they also include the cosmetic features such as flowers, bridges, and bricks.
The application is pretty easy to use and plot out the island features. It's a select and click function. I made a quick map in the picture above. I like the quick access to certain points of the island without the need of ramps, bridges or ladders. Also there is a bridge between two mountains for a sense of depth and adventure.

Planning out your map for your island on Animal Crossing New Horizons has become easier with 2D and 3D tools. One 3D tool I want to share is the Island Planner on https://bobacupcake.itch.io/island-planner. This is a free to use interactive tool that folks can use via browser or download the software to their computer. It is compatible with Windows, Mac, & Linux. It's really easy to use. I like the feature that I can press down on a design element like pathways, bushes, flowers, and even cliffs and scroll using an arrow key to fill/add. It makes for an easy fill without clicking every time. They currently have just the basic design elements and it is a good way to get a good feel for design.
The pictures above are some designs I'm messing with for ease of travel and decorating. I might attempt to do this next year. Perhaps another ramp behind the house to make it easier to reach Red's shop when they stop by. ;J
