since neither the anime or manga handled them very well I was wondering how would you have handled the invisible fighters?
Handle them largely the same as in their focus episode of the anime, but then at the end reveal they were a fake out and have an entire episode after it where everyone has to fight Shantsa’s solid illusions, with Shantsa generally being portrayed as a bigger threat surprisingly.
The thing about Gamisaras and Damon in both versions is that they’re just gimmick characters. They exist to basically get Piccolo eliminated so he can’t help out the team in the final battle, while Ganos vs Roshi was the real main show of the universe 4 vs universe 7 conflict.
The anime writers wanted to keep Piccolo around long enough for him and Gohan to fight the universe 6 Namekians, but in the process they also had the Roshi and Ganos conflict come a good while before that as well, which meant we were left with the gimmick characters for universe 4′s last stand, which as we saw was anti-climactic.
The manga seems to be setting it up so that Ganos will be the final opponent this time around given Gamisaras and Damon were taken out much earlier (I mean, I assume that’s what Toyotaro is doing, so long as he doesn’t eliminate Roshi some other way).
Which, I guess would be better for the team’s send off, but then again in the process Toyotaro screwed over Android 18, Piccolo and the Kamikazi fireballs, all of whom were more developed and important characters and who got to do more in the anime, making their participation seem pointless in the process. That to me is the bigger sin than episode 119 of the anime being an anti-climax.
I suggest having Shantsa be the real final opponent because that way the apparent anti-climactic defeat of the invisible fighters after all the build up they got in favour of the funny looking little guy who doesn’t seem that important would at least feel somewhat subversive, something you could totally imagine Toriyama doing, while also giving us another potentially good fight right afterwards so it doesn’t feel so much like the audience was cheated out of a satisfying resolution.
You don’t even have to have Shantsa eliminate everyone. Just have his illusions be a serious threat that pushes the remaining teams to the edge trying to hold them off, while maybe doing some character work with Gohan and Goku, being confronted by the echoes of the various fighters they’ve been forced to send to their doom taunting and scolding them for their role in everyone’s deaths. Have a quiet moment with the two in the midst of the fight then resolving to set everything right in the end, like reviving the other universes.
Heck, you could end the fight with most of universe 7 being backed into a corner about to be eliminated by a never ending sea of illusion fighters. Only for Shantsa to simultaneously taunt Toppo with hallucinations of his friends and universe being erased, provoking a breakdown and an angry outburst where Toppo charges up his ki to maximum and the resulting waves of energy knocking Shantsa down and off whatever rock he’s perched on, leaving him momentarily open for a somewhat crazed Toppo to quickly blast him out of the arena.
In which case, boom. You have a much more intense final fight against universe 4 without necessarily eliminating any more of the remaining characters and allowing things to play out mostly how they did in the anime. But in the process, Gamisaras and Damon’s mediocre at best performance in the previous episode is made a bit more forgivable.
We’d get some interesting character work with our heroes and some contemplative moments over the whole seemingly grim nature of the tournament of power, and you could even have a moment with Toppo being horrified at the end of unwittingly sentencing a universe to death, and having it really hit him that yeah, he’s going to have to make some compromises if he wants to save everything he loves, setting up further for his ascension to a God of Destruction later on.
Seems like that would have been the best way to go about things to me, rather than just have Shantsa be a gimmick character too that gets taken out in the middle of the episode.
