Apple Chronicles: The High Line

After touring Boston and Washington, D.C., we’re back in New York City.  And as a person who likes exploring on foot, I wouldn’t miss The High Line.  It had become one of my favorite places in NYC and here’s the day I walked its route:

We were the most unscrupulous, sinful bunch of New Yorkers that the Gansevoort ever saw. I knew I was living a life that wasn’t mine but I didn’t care, I never cared, and it all gave me an excuse not to go back to my own life for a while. Hot pink bebe dress, bleach blonde blow out, Aquazurra pink pumps: I was barbie and you were so handsome that it was nearly boring. And everyone stared, everywhere. And even though you hated me in the end, I think you still loved me in these moments; I was beautiful and carefree and completely yours. You always told me you didn’t like to be played, which I thought was funny because you played everyone else. All the people around us at 2, 3, and 4 in the morning worshipped you. And you toyed with all of them and destroyed some. I think what you did back then was all justifiable: everyone fucks you in the end, so you might as well fuck them back. 

So it’s funny when he asks me to go out with his friends, here in Columbus, Ohio, and I hold the old bebe dress up to myself in the mirror. He asks me if I hate Columbus, if it will ever be enough for me, and I wonder what flaw in the human condition makes us ask questions, and fish for information, that will break our hearts. So I smile and say everything is fine and put on a pair of white, ripped jeans and a t-shirt, which both kills and amuses me. 

We go out with a bunch of pre-med students. I wonder if they’re heavily drinking because they work in medicine or if they’re in medicine because of a subtle curiosity to understand why they drink. The place we go, Barley’s, has a changed menu from seven years ago. The married couple with us complain of each other when their counterpart is gone. The waiter forgets my dressing on the side and adds too many olives to my Gin martini. 

I often wonder if this will be the last day in Columbus or the last day of me.
