The Hartsook Inn was built in the early 20s and rebuilt in the 40s after being destroyed by a fire. Surrounded by massive redwoods, the inn became popular among celebrities like Mary Pickford and Bing Crosby. Buildings included the grand lodge, 50 cabins and two maintenance barns.
The Hartsook operated as a hotel through the 70s until burning down again. Today, the 4th Hartsook Inn, rebuilt in 1973, is closed. In 1998, it was purchased by Save the Redwoods League and in 2007, they sold it to the Heartwood Institute, who operated it as a retreat center.
Honestly, I don't know who owns the Hartsook today. It was last sold in 2021 but appears to be empty. It remains closed but is not abandoned. There is likely a caretaker still living on the property. Located in Humboldt County, near Garberville, California.
