Song Review: Garrison Starr & the Milk Carton Kids - “Fireworks”
It’s almost the Fourth of July, Garrison Starr sings to open “Fireworks.”
But Starr’s remake of an old song with the Milk Carton Kids is less about the holiday and more about another kind of lightning that sometimes strikes in summer.
Fireworks, lights and sparks/so beautiful in the dark/you’re beautiful in the dark, Starr, Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan sing on the chorus of this gentle, acoustic ballad.
Despite Starr’s lead vocals, “Fireworks” now sounds like Kids’ play, which seems to the point as she said: “I haven’t had many people cover my songs or want to do a new version like this … (it) just filled my heart up.”
Ryan, a former roommate of Starr’s, said the tune “is one of my favorite (of her) songs” and called the composer “one of our generation’s great voices.”
“Kenneth complements her so well on guitar. … I was just honored she wanted to record this song together all these years later.”
