Gartung was born on St. Patrick’s Day, 17 Mar 1920, to George F. and Leah (Schroen) Gartung in Ypsilanti, MI. He spent much of his youth in Chicago, where he attended Austin High School. Their 1938 yearbook says he went by “Bob” and describes him as “industrious, mischevous, and speedy.” He attended Michigan State University and In 1950 he married Sylvia E. Starch and started a family. Bob passed away on 26 Jan 2004. His last residence was in Lansing, MI.
