Gary Lee Conner Sings “Transfiguation” for Forthcomimg Screaming Trees/Mark Lanegan Doc

Sitting in his back yard in Texas, his dog, Rubble, by his side, Gary Lee Conner revisited the Screaming Trees’ “Transfiguration” for a visiting filmmaker.

The occasion, Conner said, is a forthcoming documentary about the Trees and singer Mark Lanegan focusing on the band’s early days in Ellensburg, Wash.

He’s crossed-legged and bespectacled with torn pants and a striped shirt - still grunge - as he plays acoustic guitar and sings. The camera work is intentionally fuzzy and double exposed; Conner’s 2023 performance is double-tracked and overdubbed with electric guitar.

His face betrays the memories as he loses himself in the song, revealing its - and his - core in the process.

There is no title or release date for the film.
