June 24th: Fungus installation in John Cage's MUSICIRCUS!
I teamed with the New York Mycological Society (NYMS) to create FORAGING, a multi-location, sound, science and social installation exploring fungi and the people who love them. Passionately dedicated to mycology (the study of mushrooms and fungi), the NYMS began some 100 years ago and quickly went defunct under mysterious circumstances. The society was galvanized in 1962 by avant-garde composer John Cage, a mushroom enthusiast who asserted that “one can learn much about music by devoting ones self to the mushroom.” FORAGING will be presented on Sunday June 24th from 10am – 9pm, beginning in Central Park with a Mushroom Walk lead by New York Botanical Gardens instructor Gary Lincoff, and then traveling to Brooklyn to be part of John Cage’s MUSICIRCUS, an event in which disparate artists perform unrelated pieces in the same room at the same time. FORAGING’s contribution to MUSICIRCUS will be an interactive fungal display featuring specimens culled from the Mushroom Walk. Ensconced by the sounds of John Cage’s 49 Waltzes for 5 Boroughs and lit by nature videos, I will host the FORAGING display in character, channeling Mrs. Lucien M. Underwood -- a real life turn-of-the-century mushroom enthusiast whose throat was slit by the New York Mycological Society’s first President.
