Gary Mangat Victorious in Pro Debut

We have written about MMA fighter Gary "Saint Lion" Mangat at ABMiV before.  This past weekend he made his first foray into the professional ranks in Nanaimo. Just as in his amateur career, his opponent, Mark Delgado was unable to stop the young man from Williams Lake.

The fight was initially back and forth, with both fighters tentatively feeling one another out. As the fight went on, Delgado was able to take Mangat down, but each time the stronger Mangat got off the mat and back to his feet quickly. About four minutes in, there is a great exchange of blows, and both fighters grapple to the ground. There, Mangat is able to take his opponent's back and win via rear naked choke.

The Champ is Here

If you read TLOP on Friday, you knew that Gary "Saint Lion" Mangat was taking on Cameron Delurme for the Battlefield Featherweight title this past Saturday at the River Rock Casino and Resort. 

In a battle that went the distance, Mangat repeatedly snapped quick kick after quick kick, which in addition to his strong grappling and jiu-jitsu game, wore down his opponent. After a grueling 5 rounds, Mangat was declared the new Champion by Unanimous Decision. In addition to the title, Mangat also earned Fight of the Night honours.

My parents sent me from Williams Lake to go to school in the lower-mainland, and I ended up falling in love with MMA,” Mangat explains. “I’d be sitting in accounting class thinking about learning submissions, and ‘YouTubing’ MMA fights and techniques.” Mangat currently works as a personal trainer in addition to working towards a full-time MMA fighting career. “I’m truly focused on fighting to make it to the top and there’s some lonely ass days…the ipod is my best friend right now, it’s with me everywhere I go.” Furthermore, its no secret as well that the voice of East Indians, and many more will be heard all over BC in this fight as Mangat who is of Punjabi nationality, will be representing much more than himself. “I come from a warrior religion and race, and you don’t see a lot of Indian MMA fighters, I want to show the world that we still have the warrior within us, … On the mornings before my fight I go to the temple to pray and then me and Bibi’ [Bibiano Fernandez] go for a walk to clear my head, and go over my game plan.” Even more willfully, Mangat explains the community motivation for his endeavors. “I’m representing the Sikh Community, and I want to be a Sikh to reach the top, that’s what I think about on the days that are tough, and I need to keep motivated.” In fact, if Gary Mangat is able to defeat Camerone Deluerme for the Battlefield Fight League Championship, he can informally be recognized as the first Sikh featherweight to be crowned a champion for any fight organization in MMA history. 

This is a big win for the fighter, as well as the South Asian community. Congrats, Champ!
