This might be one of, if not, the oddest pairing of a director and plot that I’ve ever seen. Coppola, the man who is one of the all time greats and created two of the greatest films of all time, directed a film without an identity. Jack has a weird plot to begin with but it’s not terrible and if it was 2006 I think something could have been made of it. If The Curious Case of Benjamin Button can be critically acclaimed then why can’t this be as renown? Yet this movie seems to suffer from the plight of having an idea but not knowing what to do with it. Should it be a comedy or a drama? It flip flops so much that it’s difficult to know how we should feel from scene to scene. That and it’s just creepy that a ten year old, yes in an adult body, gets involved with some shady business. I think if we got rid of the notion of this fantasy disease and made Williams say, mentally challenged, then we might have had something here.* But as it stands it’s a movie at conflict with itself and it started a downward trend that Coppola never recovered from.

*I am not suggesting that mentally disabled is an ‘easier’ subject or you can throw it around willy nilly. I just think a fantasy disease is too much of a stretch when there are mental or even physical disorders that can be easier to explain Jack’s plight.
