It's Open Season!
2013 was my very first encounter with the CrossFit Open. An opportunity to register with thousands of other CrossFitters from around the world to battle against each other to not only see who would qualify for Regionals but to also see where you, as an individual would place IN THE WORLD! Well another year has gone by, my CrossFit journey continues and we find ourselves yet again on the verge of The Open. For some reason this year there just doesn't seem to be the same buzz within our box that we experienced last year. I guess it could just be that we are still a month or so away from when that first workout will be announced......or it could be that not as many athletes from our box will be participating in the event this year? I know that after the end of last years Open I said that I wouldn't be doing that again......for me I felt it to be such a drain, physically and mentally. Every week I was just exhausted. But as soon as CrossFit announced that registration was live......I was there, registered and ready! I think that the big change has been that I've had a year to think about it. Another year of CrossFit experience. I've come to realize that even though I am pitting myself against the rest of the world, this event, for me at least is all about enjoying it, having some fun and not taking it too seriously. I'm not going to The Games as a competitor. The Open is something to measure my fitness. So if your in two minds as to weather to sign up or not.....my advice to you would be yes. Do it. Don't think too much about it. Enjoy it. Support your fellow box athletes and have fun!

Going Legless!
Don't know how many of you saw the CrossFit Games last weekend? I certainly watched every second of it.....in fact I've watched some events multiple times!
One of the events on Friday night was called "Legless".....a 15 foot rope-climb without using the feet and thrusters. It was incredible to watch, edge of the seat viewing as some athletes were litteraly hanging on for dear life, unable to move another inch up the rope.
Anyway, this got me thinking today during our workout at Track Town CrossFit......could I do just one 15 foot legless rope-climb? We had just completed 8 rounds of 20 double unders and 1 rope-climb. A pretty fast WOD, but I thought what the heck, lets give it a go! I tried with my gloves on but just couldn't grip the rope enough, when I'm using my feet my hands aren't actually doing much, just keeping me close to the rope. So I took my gloves off and tried again. It was going pretty well if I do say so myself. My grip was good and I was trying to do a kip movement as I'd seen last week on the CrossFit Games......it certainly helped.
I got about 14 feet off the ground and was just one small push to tap the beam at the top.........I was frozen!! I threw my hips upwards and reached for the beam...."TAP"......but my grip was failing and I began to slide down the rope! I regained my grip after falling about half way down the rope but this then ripped my palm and a couple of fingers. Boy did it hurt after I'd gotten back to the ground.
So, I learnt today that I can actually climb a rope without using my feet.....coming down the rope is way harder without your feet and rope burns hurt.....alot!!
Would I do it again, probably, but just not yet :)
