Riflespeed Modular Gas Control…Product Spotlight
If you’ve ever tinkered with the AR-15 platform long enough, then you’ve inevitably ran into some sort of gas system issue. The originally designed M16 rifles called for a 20 inch barrel with a particular gas port size to run correctly with the specified ammo. With the AR-15 as well as later variants of the M16/M4, there’s many different barrel lengths with different gas port sizes and gas requirements to operate. Then when you add the additional backpressure that a suppressor can add, you’ll have a lot of physics working against the original gas system design. One of the inventions over the past couple of decades to address this is an adjustable gas block. Almost every major player in the AR-15 game will offer their version of an adjustable gas block. The other way to counteract a heavily gassed system is to use a heavier buffer, but that’s not always the best way forward. Adjusting the gas travelling back to the gas key on the bolt carrier will help the action to cycle normal. One of the issues with an adjustable gas block is typically the gas adjust is under the handguard requiring a long tool to adjust. This is where Riflespeed and their Modular gas Control gas block really start to shine, in their ease of adjustability.
Riflespeed offers their adjustable gas system in a variety of sizes and flavors to fit whatever scenario you might encounter the need for one. You can purchase from Riflespeed directly or from Brownells. Riflespeed gas blocks have a 12 position adjustable gas dial on the front face of the gas block with positive click detents as well as laser etched numbers on the dial itself for easy reading of the current gas setting. The Riflespeed gas blocks come with 2 set screws, a pin for bombproof mounting to the barrel as well as an extra gas pin. The beauty of the Riflespeed gas block is the the dials come in different lengths so that when sized correctly, the dial extends past the front of the handguard for easy to access adjustments. No more need for a tool under the handguard and guessing what setting you’re currently at. The gas blocks come in the different journal sizes of .625, .750 and .875 to fit all commonly sized barrel gas journals. The one thing different about these gas regulators is the gas tube must be a straight version not the typical curved style, so be sure to pick that up form Brownells or Riflespeed when you place your order for one. Spare parts for the modular gas regulator, such as detents, wave springs etc… are also available at Brownells or Riflespeed.
Overall I think this new Riflespeed modular gas system is quite the game changer. It’s not as cheap as traditional gas regulators, but should eliminate many of the issues that the standard adjustable gas block faces. The accessible nature of the adjustment is such a welcomed design. My plan is to utilize this on my Ruger SFAR in .308 and replace the factory adjustable gas regulator that only has 4 settings.
