Beginning stages of the peanut harvest, in Gates County, North Carolina.
Mature peanut plants are spaded and turned over to dry in the fields before the peanuts are gathered and cleaned for processing. Walking in this field was for me one of those moments when a scent flooded me with profound and clear memories of time spent with my grandfather. He constantly quizzed me on the agricultural products we would see during countryside drives, though sometimes it’s hard for a five year old to tell peanuts from alfalfa! Peanuts are easiest when they are no longer in the ground. The scent I picked up on this day was a familiar mixture of sweetness from the early stages of decaying plant material, combined with a slight peaty smell from rich dark soil.
They will no doubt make exertions to conceal him.

When I was heavily pregnant with our middle son, we lived in the country, where blueberries were grown everywhere. People sprayed them with grape Kool-Aid to keep the birds from eating them all, and women faithfully baked and mixed and tumbled them into every imaginable dish.
The summer months were a surfeit of blueberries.
One kind farmer told to come pick at his farm any time, and he would leave a little wooden stool out there for me.
Now and then I would leave my fractious toddler at home with his father, to wander with my bucket and the wooden stool, round and dizzy as a bee under the June sun, eating all the sunwarm fruit I could hold. I loved the pink frosty color of the berries not yet ready to pick, and the deep purple of the gravid ones dropping into my cupped hands.
