"The soundtrack at the Gateways [principle lesbian bar in 1960s London] included most of Dusty [Springfield]'s hits. Songs like 'You Don't Have to Say You Love Me' chimed with the clientele, with yearning lyrics about loving against the odds or surviving rejection. Other popular tunes on the jukebox were the Everly Brothers' 'Walk Right Back' and 'Walking Back to Happiness' by Helen Shapiro. As another club-goer remembered: 'The jukebox was always going. All the latest hits and lots of old classics as well. All the Tamla Motown stuff was at its height; the Ronettes and the Supremes were played over and over.'
The writer Maureen Duffy remembered hearing Frank D'Rone's 'Strawberry Blonde (The Band Rocked On)', Adam Faith's 'Someone Else's Baby' and 'lots of Beatles of course', "Needles and Pins", the Searchers, about the breaking up of relationships'.
