Norsery Rhymes from A to Z Matrons Gavasiae, the Goddesses of Midwives
Happy Thorsday! - Here’s another 20 min sketch of a Norse (and Germanic, Celtic) mythological characters. This week it’s the Matrons Gavasiae / Matres Gavasias / Matronis Gavasiabus.
Three guardian ancestral protective Matron (Mothers) and Goddesses, found mentioned around Cologne and Thorr.
Their name has generally been understood to translate to “clothes" or “swaddling clothes”, indicating they may have been goddesses of child birth and midwives. Though to possibly be related to the Gavadiae.
