Happy Bandcamp Friday. Here's a post about an album not currently on Bandcamp. Yes, the music is The Pastels excellent debut compilation "Up For A Bit With The Pastels", but really this is about a new collaboration between Stephen Pastel (and at times members of The Pastels) and Gavin Thompson.

"This Is Memorial Device" is the musical companion to the theater production based on the cult novel by David Keenan. Memorial Device is the fictional band in the book, and Stephen Pastel and Gavin Thompson bring the book to life with their music. Geographic (sub-label of Domino Recording Co. curated by Stephen Pastel) is releasing the album. There are two tracks currently available: "Introduction To Why I Did It" and "We Have Sex". The latter is built upon teenage recordings Stephen made with his friend Corky.

According to the Domino release page, this sounds like The Pastels in some spots and nothing like The Pastels in others. This endeavor recalls the BMX Bandits' soundtrack to the film Dreaded Light.

Road Work Ahead Rewrite Update

Dudes, I'm really excited because I'm able to salvage way more of the original novel than I thought I could (right now it looks like I've salvaged at least 25k of scenes, though there are a few more that I think I'm going to be able to copy into the new version with a few tweaks). One thing I am coming up against, though, is the fact that my writing style has changed drastically since I was nineteen. It's been four years since I wrote this book, and since I wrote it so fast (over the course of about four months) without my current level of quality-to-pace, it suffers a bit even in the scenes I can copy over with tweaks to accommodate for plot. There are a lot of places where I can keep nearly the entire scene, but I have to add new lines/phrases here and there to give the original writing more...flavor, if that makes sense? It is fun to do, though, kind of bringing out the bones of what my nineteen-year-old self wrote and fleshing them out into a good story. I think she'd be proud!

The Importance of Conflict in Plot and Rewriting Books: Road Work Ahead

So I'm doing this project where I'm COMPLETELY REWRITING a manuscript I wrote in college (the first manuscript of four I finished in college, I'm proud that I wrote it and that it kickstarted me back into original writing, but it is so fundamentally flawed bc it has fun character designs and a fun concept- witches on an RV road trip- but has literally NO PLOT. Like, no conflict, nothing driving the emotional stakes beyond a minor romance arc, NADA) and I thought that this was going to be really hard bc I've never completely rewritten a book before but I'm realizing that I'm actually able to keep more than what I was expecting!

See, the main problem with the original Road Work Ahead manuscript is that none of the emotional resolutions had any set-up. You just got the reconciliation between Jason, the main character, and his twin sister Jayla without showing them estranged. Beth, Jayla's undead girlfriend who Jason Raised from the dead (yes, and), randomly got brought back fully to life in the middle of the book. The only thing keeping Gavin, the love interest, and Jason from being together was that they're both afraid of not getting happy endings which is understandable but crucially not enough to sustain an entire book.

The trick I'm finding, though, is that I'm able to keep some of the more impactful scenes (the first chapter where we meet everyone/the road trip kicks off, Gavin and Jason's almost kiss under a blanket fort in the RV, their actual first kiss (not spoiling the context), Gavin calming Jason down from a panic attack, and Jayla playing music in the park where her and Jason's parents met as a tribute to her dead mother + Jason & Jayla's reconciliation) just with some changed/added lines. Introducing the stakes/plot/Jason's actual plan to bring Beth back to life at the stakes of his own magic (no spoilers, he literally tells you that within the first couple of chapters) in the first chapter, building up better conflict between Jason/Gavin through how they view the importance of their respective magic, showing Jason&Jayla's estrangement, etc. Sure, I'm having to move around a lot of events and cut/add in a bunch of new shit in the beginning-middle of the book, but I'm way more optimistic about this project than I was a few months ago when I first started thinking about before shelving it until now.

(Also, this is not going to impact the timeline on getting out This Rotten Work- it's just likely going to replace fanfic updates on my timeline for a week or two until I really get into a rhythm writing.)

Basically, kids, if there's one thing I've learned through writing fanfic and books, it's that SET UP AND PAY OFF ARE THE BASIS FOR ANY GOOD STORY. Y'all aren't going to get good emotional moments if you don't set up the stakes for them. Conflict is important for making things compelling.

Here was my take on the Gay Games 9: Cleveland + Akron Medal Design. They opened up a contest to Cleveland area artists to create a design that would be used for the Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Participant medals to be handed out at the event. My design was based around a scalable vector design that would work without color restrictions. Cost of production was a factor in my design decisions so I chose to create a 1-sided medal that can be scaled to any size and would be carved/raised instead of relying only on color. (also allows for easy double sided versions in bronze, silver, etc) The white sections of this design represent the raised while the black represents the carved. (can be reversed if desired)

http://www.gg9cle.com/ will announce a medal design winner at the end of July so fingers crossed that they are interested in how I represented the event given their set branding guidelines.

Gavin Thompson Ω Seventeen Ω Son of Dionysus Ω

The Thompson family is very well known on Long Island and Martha's Vineyard for their unique wine. To most, it is either the best they've ever had or the worst. For the Greek god Dionysus, it was more along the lines of some of the best. He visited the vineyard often and soon, the youngest Thompson daughter, Hailey, fell for the God. They slept together and in less than a year, there was a new addition to the Thompson family. Hailey's parents weren't proud, but they took care of the young boy, raising him around the vineyard.

Gavin is a very meticulous kind of man. He never leaves anything half done and he always strives to do his best. He's picky from things such as his food to his friends, taking extreme care when choosing. He has a knack for choosing the best, so if you find yourself friends with Gavin Thompson, you should feel special. Gavin can be cold to those outside his inner circle but once you get to know him, a kind side comes through that shocks most.
