Ohhh boy, where do I start?
Gavin is undoubtedly my favourite character in the series, but I'm pretty sure that's obvious. To be honest, I wasn't much of a fan of him in the first book, he just seemed a bit too aggressive there, the only scene I really liked was when he and Alistair first met, and when he kidnapped Walsh. I felt like those parts hinted at what his character would transform into in AooD subtly.
In the second book, we get to see a whole new side of him. This Gavin is manipulative, clever, yet surprisingly empathetic at the same time. We also get to know more about his family, with his very different interactions with Callista and Fergus. With Callista, I felt awful because his sister practically ignored his existence. Like, who does that!? Meanwhile, his conversation with Fergus shows that there's potential for him to fix his relationship with his siblings, maybe even a redemption arc for Callista??
Pairing Gavin with Alistair was probably the best decision Amanda and Charlie ever made. I mean, two extremely morally-grey boys with disappointing families? And although I'm not a big fan of the enemies-to-lovers trope, this was done so smoothly without disrupting the plot or being unnecessarily shoved into the spotlight it's impossible to dislike it.
I love the Gavin-Hendry-Alistair trio too. They work so well together, each with significant roles to play. When Hendry dies, the grief Gavin feels proves that he actually did grow closer to both the brothers and did care for them.
My favourite scene with Gavin is the one with Reid. He shifts from lethal to vulnerable in such a short span of time that it's bound to stir up sympathy. When he realizes he won't be able to kill Reid shows that is, in fact, human and extremely young too. These small sprinklings where he gets to feel vulnerable emotions make his character so much more relatable in my opinion.
Do let me know what you guys think and whether you feel differently about any of these points. Would love to hear your opinion!
