something that's always on my mind is why max was so affected by what happened in Qatar. He already had the championship secured; it was just a fight for one position and for george it was just a racing incident, so why did it hit him so hard? knowing that max has had “worse” problems with other drivers, why was this one feel so personal?
Obviously it was not at all about the grid penalty or the race even if he tried to pretend it was, even if he said "I have never seen someone try to screw someone over that hard" over and over without actually ever alluding to what George said that was so wrong.
So, let's piece this together: from George's account of things, which I will not take as the hard truth either, he (George) did not fight the stewards but also did not agree with Max. George said in his Abu Dhabi monologue that what Max was upset by was not the penalty but rather the fact that he did not get George's support, and while I do think he might've been diminishing how confrontational he might've been at the stewards', I do think he is very right about this; Max was upset that George went against him, in public, instead of giving him his wholehearted support and going "yayyy max you are so right about everything all the time now let me suck your dick uwu"
We could leave this here bc that's pretty much what it boils down to but if you are a contextcel like me you might wonder how it even got to that point in the first place. That Point aka Max being so desperate for George's approval that he threatened vehicular assault over it.
So, it all started in Vegas—well, actually, not really, they had been disgustingly awkward-flirty with each other for a good part of 2023 and then most of 2024, but Vegas is when it starts getting a little less "awkward coworker flirtation" and more "let's have sex immediately god i want you so bad"
Vegas is George's 3rd race win and Max's 4th world championship, in one race (i wrote a fic abt this in case you want more thoughts). They are both very happy about this and being so insanely disgustingly sweet to each other. George makes a post congratulating Max on his championship and out of all pictures to use for said congratulation chooses THIS ONE:
Which is, by the way, an incredibly horny picture. Call me rpfbrained all you want but this image looks taken from the cover of a racing gear fetish magazine if there ever was such a thing. They're giving each other starry-eyed looks, dry-humping in their racing suits, there's also that video of George giving Max his coat back, which is from Vegas as well.
Oh by the way here is footage of (sometime near) the moment this picture was taken. In which George asks Max "going out tonight?" and Max gives him the happy puppy smile and goes "yeah I think so"
Ahem.
Here is George congratulating Max after Vegas quali as well. And another angle of the post-race shot. Because it's fucking erotic like that and I like posting it.
So. Vegas happens, and the next race is Qatar.
In Qatar, George gives an interview where he says he "saw Max at the bar (in Vegas) nodding off but Max didn't see me". The journo asks Max if this is true and then George proceeds to scramble to speak over Max before he can give his answer and say that no, Max didn't see him, again, insisting. Then calls Max a "man of many talents." Now I will try not to be yaoibrained about this, but. Okay I have failed I am being yaoibrained about this. What the fuck happened in Vegas.
So anyway, they are still being stupid and starry-eyed about each other in Qatar.
George is in his beautiful white suit, looking like a cherub from the paintings, smiling at Max like he hung the moon and stars in the sky. Max is at this point on so many layers of inner panic and distress. It's like, "I got the cookie, now what the fuck do I do with the cookie. I should kill myself. Or him. I should kill him and then myself."
What better excuse to sabotage it all than George suddenly being all mean and terrible in the stewards? What a perfect Narrative to cling onto to avoid having to face the fact that he might like George a little more than the Normal and coworker-friendly amount.
Max said it "felt like talking to a brick wall" (about George) in that stewards' room. He was going to get from George either the uttermost compliance to The Plan (elope and get a cottage in the bahamas and fake their own deaths) or he was going to destroy whatever it was they had. He did try his damn hardest, to be fair (see: threatening vehicular assault and calling him slurs) but then to his endless despair, George shows up the next day at the driver's parade to talk with Checo, Carlos and Max and casually brings the fight up and even some of the details of it to Checo and Carlos, joking about it like he's already past it.
George, in his Abu Dhabi monologue, said something along the lines of when he went to sleep on Saturday, he was fine.
So, George was fully ready to forgive Max for his outburst, because he thought that's what it was: an outburst, not Max actively trying to burn the bridge between them to atoms. So, George is past it, Max is very much very unhappy about this because he wanted the George in his mind, who hates him, to match the George in real life, who is ready to put it past them and move on, who understands Max's temper maybe a lot better than most people.
This is where Max gets insanely hypocritical and also scared and also goes completely insane and tells the press George is a two-faced snake. Call coming from inside the house etc etc but we know this already. Anyway. This is getting Long. Fuck my life.
One very, very important detail about all this debacle that a lot of people gloss over is the fact that according to George, Max said he was going to let him through in the race. That he wasn't even going to race him. Then why on god's green earth was he so upset about the grid drop if he was already willing to give George P1 from the get-go?
Because he wanted to give him P1. Because he wanted to give George proof of undying devotion or whatever gay shit was going through his mind in that moment and he expected the same from George, he wanted George to tell the stewards to fuck off and get off Max, if Max's proof of love was giving up a win then in his mind, George's should've been giving up his too, giving up being right.
Of course this is an entirely insane line of reasoning but, Max is very much stupid, stupid, and again stupid about George. I highly doubt he has ever had anything remotely resembling a coherent thought about George. In his mind George is the most beautiful person alive and also a whore and also the teacher's pet and also a very uncomfortable coming to terms with finding pretty boys hot and also an abstract painting of Gabi Bortoleto. But like.
I've said enough, Christ almighty.
Tldr: it very much did NOT stay in Vegas.
MERCEDES ADMIN HAS NO CHILL 😭🫶
Saw your rb on my post on George bringing up the picture of him and Max from karting days and alluding to the fact that Max won the championship, and it's something I've been thinking about too, it makes me so insane it's so UGH!!! Either George genuinely does not know/remember that Max in the end got his win taken away *or* he willingly forgot it or, maybe even if he remembers decides to think of Max as the winner. Which in all cases means George sees Max as The Guy Who Is Supposed to Win, which makes me so insanely unwell sorry I'm having a breakdown about it in your inbox hahagds. I feel like the fact that this was George's second KF3 European win in a row adds to it a lot it's so... layers.....
No because you're so right. Either George never knew that Max was disqualified from his win (which imo is unlikely) or he just chose to ignore that because to him Max IS the winner, deserved it too. There's another IG post circulating on twitter where George is in Max's comments some 12 years ago joking about how Max's bumper is always smashed up (https://x.com/russtappens/status/1954890969033199620) which also makes me slightly insane. I genuinely think these two have much deeper lore than we realize from their time in karting, before they probably went separate ways until George made it to F1, and the way they perceived each other then and see each other now is probably heavily informed by a bunch of stuff we don't really know (yet).
To heal us❤️🩹
This is what I've been saying! George mentions Max all the time 🤭
Who's the most active in a group chat? Everyone says either George or Carlos. Even Carlos says himself and George.
Then George: Max is quite vocal🥰☺️
With this smiiiile!
