Some thoughts on Sterek
I ship Sterek. I write all the AU's and have several friendship fics in the making. I just wanted to talk about my stance a little clearer.
- As a lesbian myself, I do not want this ship as a representation of Queer Relationships. I do not want them canon. Why? Because Canonically, Derek is abusive, emotionally manipulative and just isn't a guy who is capable of a healthy relationship. Especially with a minor. These relationships are littered all over television and what we really need guys, are relationships that are healthy, that show that queer relationships are no different from straight relationships. We need to look at a relationship and go "I want that" and not be in danger of putting ourselves at risk. We need more relationships like Ethan and Danny. We don't need to give people more proof as to why same sex relationships are sinful or dangerous.
- As a writer/fanfic reader, I'm always drawn to the abusive relationships. I like dark, and I like very dark. The only happy fic I write for Sterek are AU's where the circumstances are different. (for example, my Fic Weeds fully intends on having a happy ending). Otherwise, Sterek is one of my dark ships and I happen to like it that way. Look, Sterek can be consensual, but realize it's going to be a fucked up, emotionally wrecking relationship for the both of them that will likely end in tragedy or just not last.
- There is no reason to erase, belittle, or dumbify Scott to make Sterek happen. Scott doesn't approve of Derek as alpha because Derek isn't a good alpha. He's smart enough to work as a vet's assistant - who by the way, usually need degrees of some kind to even get that far. Scott wouldn't approve of Sterek because all he's seen Derek do is get people hurt but he's not the kind of guy who would push it. He would be there to support Stiles when things fall apart, he would be there to make sure Stiles isn't on Derek's list of people he gets killed. Say it with me. There is no reason to erase, belittle, dumbify or villify Scott just because he's looking out for his best friend.
- Touching back on the canon point, Stiles and Derek are not gay. It's not a switch and it's not something where Derek can decide women are just not working out for him, okay? If you're going to make Derek gay, do it in a way where he realizes he might like men. Play with the realization, work it into your fic. Make it part of the plot. The same goes for making either of them Bisexual. We've seen this possibility in canon for Stiles - it's entirely believable to make Stiles Bisexual. But we have seen no such realization with Derek and it would be really nice if we could all keep that in mind in fic. And stop doing this magic wand thing where they're all gay now. Seriously. Stoppit.
