many works of fiction have been praised with a comparison to Terry Pratchett’s famous Discworld, rightly or wrongly.
but for the record, the single work that I have found which I think truly matches that matchless series for sheer breadth of cast, spanning every nook and cranny of society from the rulers to the beggers to the just plain weird, and every one complex and interconnected; in a world a lot like ours but maybe a little to the left for the medium/genre; running for real-world decades a relentlessly insightful, witty, funny, cutting and caring critique, commentary and all-around story of modern life…
…is the comic Doonesbury by G. B. Trudeau. Seriously, go check it out if you’re interested in a view of recent American history from someone shouting merrily but meaningfully from the sidelines since 1970. There are probably collections in your local library, or you can find a complete archive here on GoComics (note: Trudeau semi-retired to Sundays only in 2014; Mon-Sat comics have been reruns ever since).
Anyone who's never read Doonesbury, what's happening in this panel?
DUNEsbury
These legendary "Doonesbury" strips address sex, war, feminism and Watergate, and one even inspired a Florida law. A new book celebrates the anniversary.
The not-so-gentle chronicler of a generation+.
I ordered this from my local indy bookstore (Powell’s) before the election. Seems fitting that it arrived today.
4 years ago, I bought the first Doonesbury collection of Trump strips, but I couldn’t face reading it until years later. Can’t wait to read this one.
