gcfjon replied to your post:That happened to me last night, but thank god it...
If you follow that trail, yes, it works (I’d like to point out I’m not a linguist), but I was just ???? about that because it was a sort of strange comparison to see.
and even then it’s not ACTUALLY a true trail. it’s like how we have words that look alike and sound alike but have an f not a ph. or a k vs a c and it makes all the difference.
so basically that person, as far as i can tell, was def wrong but very easy to see how they got there accidentally lol.
That happened to me last night, but thank god it wasn't a published work. Instead, it was a rper trying to say that skadi (Old norse noun for "harm") to the word sceadu (Old English noun for "shadow") and It peeved me so much, because a) how would the meaning change so much in little time, despite lexical shift and b) skadi and sceadu are in no way similar phonetically either. Plus, I know they got it from wikipedia
yeah well the problem would def be if u follow the crumbs!! you go from sceadu to old high german scato to proto german skadwaz which wants to say comes from old norse skadda which boy howdy doesn’t that SOUND like skadi and it’s like ?? ? ?
u can’t just.. that isn’t always how.. words... work.
and honestly using wikitionary to travel that line of thought dead ends at skadda, but if u jump down to modern norwegian skodde you get SHOE??
but if u skip around skadi you end up with a lot of words with a C not a K, so like old high german scado, which eventually gets to schaden and that ONE LETTER makes all the difference bc get back to norwegian u get skade vs skodde. i can see how someone might mix it all up!
and it’s just like.. there is a reason there are ppl who get DOCTORATES in linguistics and stuff like that bc it’s a LOT and even me rn trying to hop around and use different websites to determine meanings can see making the jump from skadi to sceadu is not great unless you REALLY know what the fuck ur on about.
and some people do!! i know of lots of folks who are like SUPER INTO THIS STUFF and i want to be but it’s VERY HARD and anyone wanting to be extremely fighty on word origins worries me tbh. they should be willing to learn and see where they might have missed a potentially necessary translation between words! even the few folks i know who do it personally and not as a professional are quick to say “disclaimer, i am studying on my own!” and are lovely to hold discussions with!

“Woman! Urge yourself, or I shall split your tongue from your skull!” spat Bestla as the storm waged its war upon the landscape outside the cavern. “’Tis but a snowstorm --- I have seen worse hurricanes as a babe,” she added, not bothering to conceal her annoyance at the growing concern of her peers. She gritted her teeth, mood blackening.

“ i want to be in love. ”
“Every girl yearns for love.” The giantess replied, gently brushing along her nose with her stylus. Lists were still scattered before her, plans for the harvest. “But some can’t tell love from their art.”
“I know love.” Hel said, determined that it was true. How could it not be? She’d seen the souls kissed by Sjofn’s gift, peered into the hearts of lovers intrinsically tied to one another by something barely comprehend-able. She picked up one of the lists and looked it over aimlessly, “I want it. One day.”
"Did you just bite me?"
❝ BITE ME MEME ( accepting )
it was more of a nibble, really. but, semantics. hati made a small chuffing noise… feeling rather overly pleased with himself. of course, he wouldn’t mind taking a larger bite, but then skoll would complain about him making a bloody mess of things.
500% would recommend. I always love seeing how people take Odin's intricacies from the myth and make him into such a three-dimensional person, and you do such a good job with it all that I dont even care that we have such different writing styles, I love how it works with your portrayal.
Send me reviews about how I portray my muse.
thank you!!! ah ha and i’m so mad about ur gefjon like fuck me uuuuup!!!! she is SO well written and interesting and i’m totally into our thread right now!!! thank u so much!
