GDC13 Agenda
Below, you'll find the overall agenda and speaker list for the 2013 conference.
Introductions and "Quick Talks"
The day will kick off with a series of "Quick Talks" on new models and methods relevant to individual, foundation and other global donors. This first session will provide summaries of some of the new ideas in global philanthropic giving. Each "Quick Talk" will provide:
Very brief intro to the model – what/who are its targets, the problem it seeks to solve, its core features and critical underlying assumptions about how to maximize philanthropic impact
A couple of examples of where the model is being used/applied; any results or evidence of success – with examples relevant to the scale and size of the investments of individual and family foundation investment
Identification of the top three issues/questions about the model that are yet to be explored/addressed – including generalizability, potential biases (cross-cultural, etc), risks, unintended consequences, challenges to scalability/sustainability, cost-effectiveness, etc.
Presenters:
Shannon Farley, Executive Director, SPARK. “Networked Philanthropy – a Next Generation Solution”
Katherine Zavala, Manager of Alliance Building, IDEX. “Long-term flexible support for locally determined solutions
”Michael “Luni” Libes, Business and Social Entrepreneur; Organizer #SocEnt Weekend. “A new approach to investing in companies that do social good, while doing good business”

Lunch and Open Space Organization
Workshops on a wide variety of topics organized using “open-space” organizing methodology. Participants will gather in groups relevant to their interests and discuss needs, ideas and resources. This format will maximize the opportunity for participants to meet and talk with each other about the topics most relevant to their global giving. There will be two 90 minute Open Space sessions with a short break in the middle. Setting expectations for outcomes and deliverables is an important part of the organization process.
Facilitator:
Robert L. Ness, founder and co-president, Global Leadership Forum and principal, Ness Consulting
Realistic outcomes for this time might include:
connections to other people and initiatives or projects;
awareness of new opportunities;
learning from the experiences of other donors;
brainstorming strategies for applying new ideas, such impact investing, social enterprise, etc. and
knowledge of the landscape and language of social enterprise, and its potential.
Closing Panel The final session of the day will be a panel of experienced philanthropists and thinkers reflecting on how to negotiate and navigate through the many new choices in philanthropic practice.
Lara Iglitzin, Executive Director, Henry M. Jackson Foundation
John Harvey, Managing Director for Global Philanthropy at the Council on Foundations
Dien Yuen, Managing Partner, Kordant Philanthropy Advisors (former Chief Philanthropy Officer, Give2Asia)
Reception
The day will conclude with a reception to continue to meet, talk and share perspectives!
Vine
In March I went to GDC again and had a great time. There was lots of vining going on. Here is someone speaking at the Lost Levels unconference in Yerba Buena Gardens. I also vined this game. Someone should make a Vine for video games.
Brenda Romero, an influential developer who has worked on everything from Jagged Alliance to Dungeons and Dragons, sounded off in no uncertain terms about her disdain for E3's booth babes, noting how uncomfortable she felt while walking the show floor at an event dedicated to the industry she helped create. "Why do I feel this way?" she asked, heatedly. "I founded this fucking industry, you motherfuckers!"
