The pedestrian struggle in South Fulton, near MARTA stops
In response to the recent post about awful pedestrian conditions on Donald L Hollowell Parkway, someone sent a note saying that she has to catch a MARTA bus on Roosevelt Highway in South Fulton, and that it's a dangerous street.
She wasn't joking. Above is a Google Street View pic of Roosevelt Highway, with a closer view below. You can see two women pushing strollers in a car lane because they have no sidewalk. This is a wide road where people probably drive very fast. They have a larger child in tow, walking beside them.
They're headed in the direction of a MARTA bus stop where yet another child is standing (it seems likely that he's with them and ran ahead).
These are the kinds of people we read tragic news stories about, where the article only mentions that the pedestrian was not in a crosswalk, while making no mention of the dangerous design.
Sadly appropriate for the situation: they're in front of an "Auto Zone." Auto zone indeed. Pedestrian safety is an issue that needs to be prioritized by MARTA and by the counties/cities it serves. Those entities need to work together on making sure that transit riders have safe pedestrian infrastructure on the streets containing and leading to bus stops. Deadly roads are not something that we have to accept as inevitable. We have the power to change them.
