a case for One More Lane™
i have literally nothing better to do on the plane right now so here's this
there's an intersection at a highway off ramp near my house that is rife with accidents — accidents that happen because it's laid out in such an apocalyptically shit way
not doxxing myself with Google Maps/Street View labels so here's an incredibly rudimentary render of it
from left to right, we have: a left turn only lane, a straight ahead and left turn lane, a straight ahead lane, and a right turn lane.
and because of how much traffic this intersection gets, the two left turn lanes are necessary to get traffic into the hospital, apartments, gas station, and shopping center off the highway without creating a parking lot on the off-ramp
the problem comes up with the way the curb opposite these lanes doesn't keep someone from continuing straight through the left-only like this:
and two or three times a month, something like this happens where a car will be going straight thru the left-only while another car is making their legal left turn like this:
which results in the person making their legal left getting t-boned into the concrete pedestrian barrier like this
i know that people could just.... pay attention to the road, the signs directing traffic, the arrows on the road, and the traffic signals, but unfortunately they can't be trusted to do so.
my solution? add another left turn lane. they're already working on a multi-year renovation of the highway 5 miles in each direction of this intersection, just fucking add a lane to the intersection as well that will keep people from going straight ahead from a turn lane. like this:
if people keep crashing here because the infrastructure allows them to, then the insfrastructure needs to not allow that kind of accident.
with the extra turn lane added, drivers will no longer be able to go straight ahead through a turn-only, people turning left aren't at risk of getting t-boned anymore, and traffic heading straight through to the on-ramp and frontage road can continue the way they used to
