“NoDAPL MURAL”
by Gearboxxx
Las Vegas Review Journal, March 11, 2017—”Activists are heartbroken after taggers made their mark Friday night on a downtown Las Vegas mural that stands as a symbol of hope for indigenous people.” In late 2016 Gear Duran, aka Gearboxxx, painted this wall (shown here before being tagged) at Coolidge Ave. and Casino Center Blvd. in the Las Vegas Arts District, in support of his “Native American brothers and sisters protesting against the Dakota Access Pipeline.” The wall quickly became a rallying place for the indigenous people of the community, and provided the background for a huge celebration of Native American culture just the night before it was vandalized. Duran, who describes himself as a “digital cyberpunk binary art slayer and visual mercenary” is a California transplant who studied in Hollywood at the Gnomon School of Visual FX. As the owner of GBX Studios he has his own line of spray paint, and in addition to painting walls and canvases he teaches both digital illustration and body painting. @gearduran @artsdistrictlv
